      primering when jams are painted

i need to shoot the car in primer one more time, whats the best way to tape the car off when the jams are already in color? overlap the primer on the color and then just wet sand it or leave 1in between the paint and primer?

A cool trick a lot of painters use to avoid a hard edge is to fold the edge of the masking tape over (but leave some adhesive exposed obviously) so when it's stuck on it has kind of a flap facing towards the surface being painted. As you're spraying some of the paint flows under the flap but no hard paint edge is formed. I had my jambs painted first then masked this way and then assembled the car and painted the exterior. You cannot tell the jambs were painted before the rest of the car.

I've always called it "back-masking" and 9 times out of 10 you can still make out where the line is; whether it's a crisp tape line or dry spray. Best is to recolor and clear the jams with final paint. JMO.
