      Cleaning the rear gears?

      Hello,
I am going to change the rear end fluid, and I was wondering if there is a cleaner/something in a bottle that I should hose the rear gears down with since I will have access to them?

You are probably better off just changing the oil. Anything that you spray in the rear end to clean it might cause the new oil to break down and cause the rear end to fail. If you were disassembling the rear end to clean it then it would be all right. If you spray something in the rear end you might not get it all out.

Just change it. Maybe wipe off any heavy sediment in the case with a clean rag or something. A cleaner will usually do more harm than good in there. If you have a drainplug and don't need to take the cover off just leave it on. If you somehow get something nasty like sand inside, I'd use some brake cleaner to flush it all out and give it half an hour to completely evaporate before putting the cover back on and refilling. If it's an LSD go real easy on it for a while so the oil can work its way into where it needs to be.
