      Iphone App?

Does anyone else think that an Iphone App for PT.com would be useful? I would certainly use it everyday when I'm out and about!

I'm not a computer guru by any means so I have no idea what it would take......but I'd download it from the App store if it was available ;)

      What do you guess think?

      Falcon,
Ya I view the site from my browser as well.
Here's my example I guess, the popular App "Facebook" is very intuative and user friendly that I almost exclusively use my Iphone to view that site rather then my PC. There is a "mobile upload" feature where you can take a pic and upload it directly to their site. Seems to me that even just that feature would be cool for PT.com? Real time uploads while your at the Car Shows, Gatherings, cruising, etc as opposed to uploading your pics hours later when you get home? You know?

Or maybe it's a dumb idea.... I just thought it would be a cool feature (if it wasn't to much hassel for the techy type guys) haha

i get your point. that would be cool. i can upload pics onto pt.com from my phone but it ends up being a hassle to format the picture.

i have never used an iphone. but i do know there apps are super user friendly. Maybe someone will make a mobile.pt.com with easy phone interface.

PT.com uses a prepacked forums software called vBulletin. I'm not terribly familiar with it, but I would assume it would take a lot of work to offer a format not offered from the vBulletin people. If, however, they offered a plugin or something for vBulletin to allow it, it should be feasible to use on PT.com.

looks like there is a "style" for it:
      http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showt...ghlight=mobile

and a plugin to automatically detect when the user is using a mobile device.

again, I'm not familiar with vBulletin, so I don't know how hard it would be to integrate.

The site definitely formats well when browsing from my cell phone. I use it often actually. I was just thinking that by incorporating an iPhone app for example with features like mobile picture uploads it could be really handy?

      Dumb idea ;)

No, it's a great idea. Umm... let us know when you've got it done?

Hahaha! Ya I wish I was that skilled! I can build myself basic websites using Dreamweaver/CSS but I wouldn't even know where to begin with something like that!?

You should be able to open the site, press one of the little buttons at the bottom and a menu will come up, select add to home page and you will have a direct link with all the other apps.

You'll need a Mac and the iPhone SDK to write iPhone code. I am told it's written in Objective-C, which is like C but wierder. The Google says you can do it in Scheme too. I started to look into it because hey, there's money to be made through the app store; but the whole "need a Mac" thing keeps me from looking harder.

I know, I download apps like a madman so I know there is definitely money to be made! Just seemed like an interesting concept for a site like this to me.

I had no idea you HAD to use a Mac though!? I started DL'ing the SDK awhile back on my PC but it was taking forever so I cancelled it. Glad I didn't wait that long and find out I couldn't upload the software.

I'm a brand new IPhone user. A generic vbulletin app would make sense. There are a lot of forums that use vbulletin.

No, it's a cool idea. I use a G1 Android phone (google phone that's touch screen and flip out keyboard so you can use both) and it would be cool for when you're working on the car and want to take a pic and post it really quick. Would save a lot of time.

Yeah, start building for android's marketplace, no need for a mac.

That's awesome you guys think it's a good idea! I know I would personally use the heck out of it but as I said before, I have NO idea how hard something like that is the design. I like the idea of creating a generic vbulletin app so ALL my forums can join in on the fun. So who wants to build it for me? LOL

The difficulty isn't writing the app itself, but getting the data to the app. You'll either need to expose the database to the internet (bad idea) or write some sort of a web service that sits on top of vbulletin to provide the raw data.

There are other methods of getting the data from this web site specifically, but something as little as a theme change could leave the app broken.

Doesn't the site allow RSS feeds already? Maybe that would be a way of capturing the information and directing it over to the Iphone App? Heck I don't know!!!!
