      500 HP'wrd Lq9

So after much deliberation with a certain someone on this particulor board "cough" Fabian "ahem" cleared my throat, thank you very much. I have dicided to go with the reliability of a fuel injected motor. After a little bit of searching ( with the help of once again fabian) I have came across lq9 that came out of a 06 ss silverado truck with I believe 44k miles on it. Instead of the traditional BBC (which I planed on stroking out to a 496 ehh maybe that'll be my next project.)
I found this motor & tranny combo for relatively cheap $1600.

I was promised by a certain person (who was previously mentioned a couple times earlier) that could achieve both major goals for my motor with this fuel injected block.

      1. Rediculous beastly aggresive idle
      2. Hit the 500 hp mark.

After checking out the comp cams (BIG Mother Thumpr) I'm hoping I could achive that real choppy sound I'm looking for.

But the dilema is that I still don't know how I'm going to hit that magical 500 hp number!!

how easily can i achieve this, any specific heads, cam combos? how much should i expect to pay to hit the 500 mark? how easy or difficult will it be to achieve this?
Any insight and info would be greatly appreciated !

500 hp has been done easily with a 6.0. Hell, Steve did a 475hp 5.3 a few months ago. There are tons of threads on the subject. Or also try ls1tech.com

500 on the engine is easy. Get L92/LS3 heads ported and setup for an naturally aspirated motor. That means the heads need to be angle milled to bring compression up to at least 10.5:1. You'll have to run an L76/LS3 intake and four bolt throttle body which means mounting an electric gas pedal in the car. Get good headers 1-3/4" will do fine or 1-7/8" will work as well. Cam selections include a Comp XER 232/240 112+4 LSA or step it up higher and go 236/244 112+4 LSA.

If you'd rather stay with Gen 3 heads so that you can use an LS6 intake and cable driven throttle body, grab some Trick Flow heads, AFR heads, or a quality ported LS6 head. Then use a Comp 232/236 112+4LSA or 236/240 112+4 LSA.

A 500 hp engine only makes approx 430 rwhp and that's easy.

      Great minds think alike

Really it is always just a matter of going with what works. There are plenty of people out there that will do something weird just to do it. If you keep it simple, you'll have a solid performer that doesn't cost a whole lot. The more I get into this, the more I revert back to KISS(keep it simple, stupid). I'd rather drive and enjoy the car

i just picked up the engine n tranny last night, but as many others b4 me it seems to be a lq4. i pulled the spark plug to check if the piston top was dished or flat but as i ran a screw driver over the top it kinda felt dished but on another board somebody had posted some pics of their flat lq9 pistons vs the dished lq4's and the ones look alot more like their flat lq9 pistons it "supposely" came out out of a 06 silverado ss truck, so it looks like im going to have to do a little bit more research to find out exaclty if i have a lq9 or lq4. I picked both tranny and engine up for $1500 if its not a lq9 i can always turn around and sell it. Iwill post pics later tonight.

i originally planned on going with a bb 454 that i intended on stroking to a 496, the reason for this was 1. i wanted a loud abnoxious chopping idle and 2 because i wanted the hit the magical 500hp mark.

As i did some research and asked a few questions i was assured by a few ppl that i could achieve my goals with a fuel injected motor, so since i found this deal i pulled the trigger. But now I am left with a few questions and hope that you guys can help me out figuring out the solution to my problem.

does any body know what it will take take to to get the
comp cam "Big Mutha Thumpr' cam in there???? I know its a huge cam and there are better and easier ways to achieve my hp goal, but like most people in this world, id like to have my cake and eat it too. I definetly WANT to have a louuddddddddddd RUFFFFFFFF iddle but at the same time i would love to get on the gas peddle and know that i can hit 500 hp when i feel like it.
      here are the cam specs

BIG MUTHA’ THUMPR™ - Street/strip, needs 9.5:1 CR, 2800+ stall, intake, gears, & headers, very rough idle.
      2600 to 6800

      54-602-11
      291THR9
      291 311
      235 249
      .573 .558
      109°

Is it feasable to reach 500 hp with this particular cam N/A?

would it be easier to just port out the stock 317 heads or to swap to the l92's to gain the extra horse power?

is it even possible to run this cam with the l92's???? any feed back would be greatly appreciated

(like i said i know they are other ways of doing it but i want the guaranteed sound and i would love to achieve the 500 hp call me hard headed)

If it's a LQ4 that's fine. Don't sell just b/c you want a 9. Compression and the pistons is about the only difference and if you go with some AFR heads that will get your compression up. Are you wanting 500 rwhp or at the crank? AFR heads, and a decent size cam with some headers should get you 450 rwhp no problem.

according to the comp cam site, they said the motor has to have a 9:5 compression to work????

      is this true????
because i was under the impression the higher compression u run the more power you getting under the engine, if this is so can you get 500 hp with a 9:5 compression?

Yes, the heads will work with the Thumpr cam. The beauty of the LSx line, is that you only have to worry about valve springs and piston to valve clearance with whatever cam you use. For this cam, you'll need dual valve springs, and if you mill your heads, you'll more than likely need to fly cut the pistons so the valves don't slam into them.

Your ported 317s will work with that cam and make your 500 crank horse power goal. This of course assumes that you have the supporting mods such as LS6 intake, headers, etc etc. Going with L92s will only help as they are a better heads. Costs go up with those heads though. Do not go with L92s if you are not having them ported as well. The cost involved to switch over is greater than the gains you'll have. Of course, at a later date you could port the L92s and what not. They ultimately hold more potential.

The LQ9 is greater than the LQ4 in stock form only. There is no reason not to use an LQ4 unless you just like to think you're hot stuff because you have an LQ9. The LQ4 is just fine. The Silverado SS came with the LQ9. I'm sorry I don't know any casting numbers for the LQ9 though.

The best bit of info ive gotten, just what i wanted to hear, (its possible to reach 500 hp with comp cams " big mutha thumpr")
thanks buddy i appreciated it alot.

quick question though, what does " fly cutting" the pistons mean? what is it exactly????

second i was under the impression that milling and porting was the same thing! whats the diffrence????

how much more performance do you gain from ported l92 heads vs ported 317 heads????

I read somewhere today the the weight difference is 65lbs. between the two. I assume that is for the iron block/alum head motors.

Flycutting is notching the pistons for valve relief. Usually with a big size cam you need to do that although I known it's been done without having flycut pistons. You are just taking a chance though. G5-X4 cam from LG Motorsports, Trex cam, Magic Stick 4, and now some new cams from Vengenance Racing are big cams with recommended flycutting the pistons. It's very simple for a shop to do.

Compression you can raise with a thicker head gasket or with the heads you put on, such as AFR's, Trickflows, etc. Yes, you get more power from higher compression, but then once you get to about 11.5, you are close to having to run a higher octane gas.

You basically need to figure out a budget and go from there. Yes, the L92 heads are good, but the AFR's are better. Yes, the Comp thumper cams are good, but you will get more power from the above mentioned cams.

I had a LS6 in my 02 Z06, AFR heads, G5-X4, LG longtubes and put down 453 rwhp. Added a FAST intake and hit 470 something. I now have a LQ4 that I will be putting AFR 205's on, Dynatech longtubes, LS6 intake, and probably the X4 cam again. Should hit 450 rwhp no problem and that's plenty for my 69.

the comp cam website said i need a 9:5 compression to run that cam, does that mean i need to run at least a 9:5 compression? or that i cant go over 9:5????

if i have to get aftermarket heads to hit that 500 hp mark i will, but il be satisfied with hitting 500 at the crank i dont necessarily need 500 rwhp

i understand it would be more convenient to go with a different cam with what im trying to achieve but i know im not going to be happy with the idle and thats really the driving force behind what im trying to do.
