Just opened the new Hot Rod Mag

Sorry if this is old, but I just seen it.

Its the Sept 09 pg 32 Couldnt find any pic on the web to post.

That thing is INSANE! I love it. I like the concept alot. Its got my mind running wild. Building somthing similar. Along these lines and a Volksrod. Like a roof skin and cowl from a 66 mustang fastyback on top of a full tube chassis, engine exposed, no doors, 03 cobra IRS and alum, floor and some race seats . Just the BARE bones.

I saw it also and I'm feeling it too, BIG TIME! The dual engine thing isn't my cup of tea, but loved, loved, loved the rest of it. It's got me seriously thinking of buying a tube bender and a welder. I tried finding a picture of it online, but wasn't able to. Killer concept.

I hear you? Not a fan of the two engines, but the rest, DAM!! I am really thinking of digging the mig back out. Now that I sold my truck project there is room for this in the shed.

That's my friend's creation, "Priapism" and the car is West L.A. I, as well as a bunch of other local fellas, helped out doing some small bits of the aluminum welding on the project and its still very much a work in progress. He'd love to hear any comments, ideas, or inspirations from folks, and he's trying to get his webiste up for Sire Custom Performance. It'll be up soon, but drop him a line at 310-671-3430 and chat it up.

The photoshoot occured at the now defunct location of Engle Cams in Santa Monica. When the Engle Bros. moved everything out to their current location in Paramount, they welcomed us and Wes Allison to come on by and use the vacant facilities for an "industrial" themed location. Mark got us all some pizza and we bid farewll to a West L.A. institution with a fitting last hurrah. (The car DOES have two solid lifter Engle cams in it...)

looks like a dual engined IMCA Mod to me..
it wouldn't be too hard to find a used Mod chassis and build from there.

I like the idea. It's something different. I'll take mine with a single power plant though. This car was featured in Hot Rod a while back and since the "Rat Rod" craze is so big I'm surprised we haven't seen more cars like this. http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicl...evy/index.html

I read that he is planning on bulding a alum body later. I say drop on some Harley Davidson V-rod headlights and call it good. I he he may be starting somthing new here. Ive already begon planning a bulid that is similar to this, but maybe alittle more body.

here you can find a good starting point, but also look around locally- i've heard of guys buying older used mod rolling chassis for as little as $500.
change the rear suspension and upgrade the front, and you've got the beginnings of whatever goofy name this build style will be called.

      I like it too

      Jimmy,

      Thanks for the info.

I saw the car too in the same issue and thougt it was really cool.

I'm a big fan of the Ariel Atom type cars (Exocars) and have been thinking of my own versoin of this local car:

I've got most of the parts lying around to build something similar.

Yeah those things are great. When I get frustrated with sheet metal (often) and interior crap, I dream of just a simple frame deal. You could even put a normal "cab" on it and have the rest be tubes.

The dual engine just makes it AWESOME, if much more impractical. But hell yeah its different.

Unfortunately a trend has been created and it will now be ultra common. The only thing that stopped me was realizing that my neighbors top of the line Ariel Atom would probably always be a little bit better execution of the concept.

But F all that bondo and panel fit stuff, not to mention Vintage Air and ultraleather !

I was thinking of the cab idea. I even sat down and drew some things up.(on paper, not computer). Like a ford ranger cab, or LUV truck, that the roof has been chopped about 4 inchs, then the rest nothing but frame, and tubes. Matby even the bed that is about 3 ft lond and 3ft wide. Just so you can go shopping. You know kind of Rat Rod meets,Trugee(those off road rides that are loosely based on a truck)meest shifter cart.

Same thought crossed my mind upon reading the first few posts and not having seen the car. Not just that but if the trend bug does bite, how many "copycats" will we see? Imagine regular cars with regular unibodies but fenders replaced with tubing that have no structural purpose whatsoever. You just wait! On the up side, isn't this basically like building a Locost with a car roof on it?

Along the same lines, I recall seeing a few street driven rock-crawler-look trucks with rollcages and no doors or fenders that follow the same idea. I thought they looked pretty cool.

Plus this 'style' must be at least 5x safer than 120% of the rat rods out there.

BTW- where the hell did she come from ?

Yeah actually I think its a good thing in many ways not the least of which is opening up an avenue of legitimacy and support for lightweight vehicles that could - gulp - use smaller more efficient engines to keep kicking ass.

The only reason I don't like it is because I've always wanted to build something like this for my "next project" and now it will be done and done.

Apart from the tube bug trend, I do give the guy major respect for bringing in the vintage dual engine idea that is totally off the charts for modern hot rods, and yet is more connected to our roots then 75% of the other things we do with cars. Impractical sure and less performance than an optimized single engine, but who cares its so wicked !

Works for me! Loose one engine though, maybe single Viper V10?

it's not all that different than street driven sand rail dune buggys, and the ariel atom as someone mentioned.
dual engines are cool, but this guy did it wrong: there should be one in the front and one in the back. I saw a VW GTI from England like that, had 2 VR6's.

If any of you get a chance to get to Don Garlit's museum of drag racing, there was a dual-engined rail there when I was last. The cool things about that were:
      1. They were different V-8s

      2. They both drove the same ring gear. One located on each side of the pumpkin and a pinion on each end. Think 9" with 2 front covers.

Not related to this style of build, but it still makes me think about how they pulled it off.

I always liked TV Tom Ivo's quad engined AWD dragster; 2 pairs of nailhead injected Buicks, 2 for the rear axle 2 for the front.
