Question - Location of a fuel filter.

We are working on a little t-bucket project for a car show this weekend and I was bending up some fuel lines to the tunnel ram and commented that the fuel filter looks like garbage up high near the carbs The engine is a 383 chevy and is using a mechanical fuel pump to feed the carbs. Can I relocate the fuel filter before the pump? I can't figure a good reason why I can't. So I'm asking for a little help here. Thanks -

Hide it back by the tank! There is no reason it needs to be between the pump and the carb. Most carbs have the little bronze filters in them anyways. All new cars have them under the car.

      Filter Location

Tony, Mechanical fuel pumps generally do not like any kind of restriction between the tank and pump, you should mount the filter between the pump and the carb, you can mount it low close to the pump, if you really want it betwee the tank and the mech. pump make sure that you use a hi flow low restriction filter, one other option would be to install an electric pump back by the tank and push fuel through the filter, from there you can run it through the mechanical pump or directly to the carb.

Absolutely not with a mechanical pump.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it. I've relocated the filter way down low, almost out of site and re routed the line back to the firewall and up the back of the block. It took a while and a few nice stick of stainless line. It's done and it looks good. Thanks again!
