      A body convertible frame for a hardtop?

      I have a chance to pick up a 64 GTO convertible frame to use on my 64 GTO hardtop. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Overall plan is for upgraded suspension, leaning towards the DSE setup front and rear.

      This was an option for Pontiac GTOs in 1965 called the heavy duty frame. It put the convertible frame under a hardtop.

      Should make things much stronger for a performance application. The siderails will be boxed vs. open on the standard frame.

      It is the equivalent to boxing in your current frame. Its your choice if you want to just box the stock one, or get one that's basically done for you.

      Otherwise it will work, and stiffen up the frame considerably.

      If you do get the conv frame, take the time to finish welding the seams between the factory welds on the box section. I did this on my El Camino frame and it made a difference. Before I could lift the rear corner of the frame (frame on jackstands) and it would go up about 4-5" inches before the other rear corner would come up. After welding it only went up 1-1.5" before the other corner lifted.
