67 camaro tire size recomendations

Hi: I bit of a convoluted question but here goes:
67 Camaro stock Subframe, Mini tubs.
List of "Wants":
1 good front to rear tire balance,
2 rear must tuck up
3 decent riding tire
List of "Fears":
18" rear will have too small of a sidewall.
I will wish I just went with an aftermarket sub and bigger tire on all 4 corners.

Thoughts: I think having the tubs and going with at 275 40 17 on the front and a 295 40 17 on the rear will provide me with my needs and tuck up nice?



Options: Just go with an aftermarket sub.. But after a recent spell with no income its a but scary to drop 5 k + on anything...

Any feedback appreciated

I have read the Carl post a few times. I don't like the idea of the camber angle required to pull the tire in. So 275 will do nicely for me.

I was hoping to create dialog. If I thought I knew all the answers I wouldn't post at all. Vegas if you don't like it then don't read my posts.

I guess I don't know what you're asking. This is my car as it sits now with C5 (not Z06 wheels - which I'll be using on my project '68). I don't know if - for your taste - it's too high, too low, not tucked in enough, tucked in too much? I'll answer questions, but I don't know how useful it will be.

I'm guided by two things: what can I do for a reasonable price and what do the guys with big teams of stylists and engineers do.

On both counts, I've decided that used C5 wheels and their tire sizes work for me - 17" in front and 18" in the rear. As much as I'd love a $3,000 set of wheels, I just can't justify that expense to myself, especially when I can have straight, used sets of four C5 wheels all day for $400 or so. When I get my project '68 done, I'll be running Z06 wheels. I fully expect to have a street and track set of wheels and tires.

As for tire sizes, the rule of thumb I've heard is no more than a 50mm difference in tire width front to rear. GM uses 30mm on the standard C5 wheels (245 front, 275 rear), and (IIRC) 20mm for the C5 ZO6 (275 front, 295 rear).

I also believe that going with stock Corvette sizes (even the Z06) will result in decent availability of decently priced tires for quite a while.

Low profile tires can make the ride harsher (and run flats can make the ride MUCH harsher) but a 40 profile isn't that low and some of the residual harshness can be compensated for by a faster complying, more supple suspension. In the car pictured above, I'm running Koni adjustable shocks and composite leaf springs. I find the combination - with the 18" 40 profile rear tires - to be pretty comfortable.

I doubt you'd go much more than a 45 profile on the rear, so a 40 profile isn't likely to be much harsher in ride. I'd be more concerned with side wall construction (where the run flats kill you), than a 5% difference in profile.

My project car will get coilovers at all four corners, pretty decent shocks on the front and really good shocks on the rear. I'll be curious to see how it does in the ride comfort department.

Thanks Mike. So 275 40 and 285 may be what I end up with.
So now for the mini tub guys (attn Frank from prodigy) with a 285 40 17 rear tire If I shorten the rear might this tuck real well? Perhaps just a fender roll?
I was hoping to use vintage wheel work v60 17x11 in the rear
