      C-10 Brakes on S-10 spindles

[quote=novaderrik;513583]you could put a Caprice/Impala 12" rotor- or even a thicker 12" mid 80's 1/2 ton pickup rotor- on the stock G body/S truck spindle using the appropriate bearings and then make some brackets for some LS1 or Vette calipers.
the HD 1/2 ton 2wd rotor is pretty beefy- 12"X1/25"- and it has the 5X5 bolt pattern with 1/2" studs...[/quote/]

Can anybody shed some light on this idea?? Has anyone done it before? Basically I want to upgrade my brakes to a 12 inch rotor and have the 5x5 bolt pattern. Help please I've searched but can't find what I'm looking for.

Most of the larger C10 and mid-70's B-body rotors are going to use the larger SET5 inner wheel bearing and have a wider bearing spacing, whereas your G-body/S-truck spindles are going to require the smaller SET6 inner wheel bearing, so I'm not sure that those rotors are really an option for you. It's nice that they're 1.25" thick which matches the LS1/C5/C6 calipers mentioned, but doesn't matter if they don't fit the spindle.

The first rotor that jumps to mind with a 5x5x3.06 pattern and SET6/SET3 wheel bearings with the proper spacing for your spindle pin is the 91-96 B-body (Impala SS, Caprice, Roadmaster, etc) rotor. The primary drawback to this rotor, which happens to be the same casting as used on the 5x4.75x2.78 1LE Camaros, is it's 1.1" thickness. It should be more or less directly compatible with the C4 calipers as used on the 1LE, but that may or may not give you the performance and/or look that you desire. I'm not entirely clear on why you want to use the G-body spindle as the starting point for a custom build. There are better and stronger spindles out there to choose from IMHO. Am I missing something?

the same rotor is used on the 80's light duty 1/2 ton trucks as on the mid 80's/early 90's Caprice- which is the same basic rotor as the F body 1LE rotor. the thicker HD rotors for the 1/2 ton truck uses the same wheel bearings on the same spindle, with the front face of the rotor in the same location as the thinner rotors and the extra thickness going on the back side. the calipers will wind up inboard a little bit, but that's good for wheel clearance as long as it clears the spindle upright.
i've been meaning to get a junkyard HD pickup rotor to see how it all fits together on one of the spindles in the 86 Monte SS that i'll probably never actually do anything with.
somewhere around here, i've got a piece of paper with all the wheel bearing and seals part numbers to make it work- i think it was just 1LE wheel bearings and races.

I agree with Tobin. I looked into swapping the HD rotor onto my b-body spindles to use with 1.25 dual piston howe's. The difference in the id and od of the inner bearing 5 and 6 sets turned me away.

Caprice/Impala rotors are a 5 on 5" bolt pattern & I believe the trucks are a 6 lug pattern. In the 80's there was a version of the Camaro/Firebird that had a 1LE package. These had 12" front brakes, they are the same rotor as the Impala only drilled for 5 on 4.75" bolt circle.

Well, I'm trying to build a truck using a S-10 chassis. The truck will be used for autocross, track days, openroad races, hillclimbs, and the occasional spirited drive on some twisty roads. I'm planning on running a big block, 4-speed, 9" floater, and truckarms. I want the truck to be super strong and dead simple. I'd like parts to be easily replacable from any parts store. The reason for the 5x5 pattern is because the truck will have alot of circle track parts, and of course wheels. I was going to do a B body spindle conversion, but after reading alot on this forum I've decided that it isn't the best idea. My old race truck was a mid 70's Chevy with 5x5 bolt pattern and the heavy duty thick rotors. I posted a question in the suspension thread about using the C-10 spindles since they are front steer like the G/S-10 spindle. The quote from NovaDerrick was one suggestion I thought sounded interesting. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Jon. Edit: this is a picture of my old truck. The one I'm working on now is a 49 Chevy.

      ooppss

up grade to the ZQ Blazer spindles from 80 up Blazers, they give you bigger brakes anyway and you can get parts to install the C5 Corvette stuff later on.

      That should read 98 up.

Are you talking about the brakes with slip on rotors & 2 piston calipers? Those are from '98-'02.

      *see above edit in RED.*

98-up blazers had the sealed hubs w/ dual piston calipers. IMO they're not really that great of an "upgrade".

oops, Samckitt beat me to it.

Plus, you're going to have the same issue with the 5x5 wheel pattern as you would with the AFX spindle and C5/C6 unitized hub asemlies. The outside diameter of the S-Blazer hub flange is 146.5mm [5.768"]...not exactly optimal for the bigger pattern IMHO.

I used the Blazer knuckles with C5 13" rotors & 2 piston calipers. Eventually I would like to go with the ATS tall spindle.

then you don't use the stock bearings- there are other bearings that come with races that have the proper od for the rotor and the bearings have the proper id for the spindle.
i've got a sheet around here somewhere that has the bearings needed not only for the G body spindle, but for the spindles in my 74 Monte Carlo, too.

Do the races between the HD rotor and the LD rotor interchange?

If they do, then you should theoretically bolt the HD rotor onto a g-body sprindle using the LD inner bearing.

Novaderrik, post of the specs from that sheet.

Searched through the Timken bearing catalog at the parts store today. In that catalog there were no matching cone and race with a 1.25" id and 2.563" od. Btw both rotors do use the same seal.

      HD rotor inner set5
      I.D.:1.3750"
      O.D.:2.5630"
      Width:0.7100"

      LD rotor inner set6
      I.D.:1.2500"
      O.D.:2.3280"
      Width:0.6250"

i can't find that sheet- i've moved since i looked into this, and it's one of those things that hasn't reappeared yet.
i did all my comparing at www.rockauto.com, but maybe there's a better place to look online. i found all the specs for every wheel bearing i could find, and found some that would work in both of my cars.
