Cross Drilled VS Slotted Rotors is it a gimmick?

I have read that its a gimmick. I have in a number of paces that Cross Drilled/ Slotted Rotors was to vent gases caused by the break pads but the materials used know don't create gases like they used to ... so what the real story why most of the after market company's do this?

Is it more for looks or does it really cool the rotors etc (i always thought if you cross drill a rotor you lose surface area and weaken the rotor (i am crazy for thinking this?)

Can any of the experts chime in to give their opinion.

Ahhhhh, search is your friend. this was very heavily and heatedly discussed for quite some time. IIRC, the general conclusion was that slotting=OK and drilling=BAD. Of course, this is as applied to a road course warrior. Street cars it is looks only.

here's my take... don't even try it if you track your car. (drilled) this was with Brembo rotors... not junk cheap stuff. Slots are ok though, but may not be needed.

I decided against it for the above reason. One of these days I may go with some nice DBA slotted rotors, but it doesn't seem totally worth the cost over delco rotors, which I can have turned when I fix the brakes (from my understanding you can't turn drilled/slotted rotors).

My personal preference is either plain or slotted. I like that the slotted rotors act as "wear bars" like they do on a tire so that you can visually tell when a rotor is done without pulling out the micrometer. Slotting does help combat glazing, however it also accelerates pad wear...how much depends on the pads you run, how hard you drive and who you ask. FWIW, DBA's testing shows about a 10% decrease in pad life.

If you're building strictly a street car that will see the occasional autocross or open track day, I'd go with the aesthetics that you want. If you're going to be pushing it and running some more aggressive pads, plain or slotted all the way IMHO.

If you've got some time to kill check out this old thread. It gets a little heated, but towards the end there are some good posts with some great info.
