      12 bolt issue, your thoughts

Today the rear end in my car developed a strange clunking sound at slow speed / leaving from a stop. It only does it a couple of times until I get up to speed and then it seems ok but I don't want to drive it now until this is figured out.

It almost feels like it is missing a tooth on the axle or ? something and I am noticing it on (what I think) the right rear.

Does anybody have any advice or thoughts they would like to share? Please!

      Axle bearing going south?

Might be a good idea to pull the cover, remove the C-clips and take the axles out for a look at the bearings.

While the cover is off you can inspect the gears.

It would be best to try to see what's going on rather than continue to drive it, the cost to repair it will likely increase unless you take some action now.

Also if reaqr end had previous history of pegleg burn outs or has abused posi it can have spider or locking clutch issues, remove cover and maybe even pull axles to check bearings and axles.

$10 in seals and silicone and $15 in gear oil is much cheaper than total rebuild.

Update: pulled the rear apart and inspected everything....all is good, just did not have enough additive in it!

      Now I feel better...lol

      Good for you !!

By the way , are you using synthetic rear-end gear oil ??
If you have a clutch type limited slip differential ( like an Eaton ), synthetic is not recommended.
Use regular rear-end differential lube and a bottle of limited slip additive.
      DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC .....
      The clutches will chatter....

EDIT : 4/21/09 . I did read some information that some synthetics contain friction modifiers that are suitable to the early
Eaton posi-units , so....... get another opinion...
