      New Member 1965 Mustang Fastback

      All,

I have enjoyed this site and the wealth of information on it. From reading the forums it really seems that people are on here to help and support each other.

I just picked up a 1965 Mustang Fastback which has always been a dream of mine. The sheet metal is original and while I will need to do some patches, I will not have to replace panels. The car is partially stripped and I am trying to move quickly to do the metal work, strip the underside, engine bay, interior etc and then epoxy prime. The exposed metal worries me.

My debate is do I pay a shop to media blast and prime or buy a compressor, DA, paint gun and DIY. I don't have tons of time to work on the car so I am hoping periodic coats of OSPHO until I can spray the whole car will keep the metal in good shape. I live in Florida and we are heading into the rainy season (humid!!!).

I appreciate any input you can offer.

      Thanks,
      Chris

Welcome Chris! Nice project you've got there! My 66 is in the same condition (bare metal body parts) in FL so I've gotta get moving on it also.

Welcome to the site. I still have a soft spot for 1st gen Mustangs. My first car was a '66 coupe.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

That looks like a damned good starting point. Have you taken a good look at the cowl? Is it solid?

As to your question, I would send it out to media blast and then put it in a couple good coats of epoxy primer.

For comparison, here's my starting point...

The only things we were able to save were the dash and the roof. Every thing else is new...

Welcome to the site! Looks like you've got a good starting point.

As to your debate; if you don't have a lot of time... seems like you've answered your own question. ;) Pay someone else. I'm in the same boat.

Thanks all. I do feel lucky to have a good starting point.

To answer the question, I need to check out the cowl next. It seems like they are a typical problem area.

We will see about having it media blasted or not. I am going to give myself until 1 Jun. If the car isn't stripped and primed by then, I will pay someone.

After talking to a shop today, I think I am leaning that way. My schedule for Apr and May just stacked up and I would love to have a clean primed shell.

      welcome fellow classic fastback owner!

      great forum here.

take it and get it media blasted - but only by someone that has good experience with classics - dont try it yourself - its really easy to heat up the sheet and ripple it or actually blow a hole in it.
you will cost yourself more money

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I will try and keep the ball rolling on this project. After I locate a cart to put the car on, it is going to the media blaster. I also need to let my bank account recover from the purchase.

Hivewax your car looks great! I agree, we need more Mustangs!
