To tub or not to tub

I have looked around the board and found alot of good information regarding tire/wheel size. I am considering mini tubbing my 65 GTO to fit a larger wheel combo. My question is will I gain any measurable room by tubbing without doing a frame mod or do I need to narrow the frame rails?

No experience with the GTOs and mini-tubbing, but on the Camaro you did need to narrow the rear frame rails in one spot on each side to get the 335 sized tires in the rear. Moving the rear leaf springs is part but not all of the battle.

Here is a good thread case you haven't seen it:

With the GTO the frame on the inside is right about the same spot as the inner fender well. So tubbing the fenderwell without cutting the frame would gain you no clearance. Some people have notched the frames and gained about an inch of clearance. But the best way to go if you want a couple inches is to section the rear frame. I am sure a couple people will chime in and give more detail on how it is done.

Thats a ton of work but looks great. The stock 65 GTO, I believe, has way less room than stock Camaros and would probably require just as much, if not more modifying. I think the 65 has even less room than the 66/67 GTO and Chevelles.

      Thanks for the reply
