did it do any damage to the existing paint??

Not at all. I poured some on a microfiber cloth and then wiped the overspray off. The acetone evaporates pretty quickly so it doesn't really sit on the paint. Of course, it may affect your paint differently, so to be safe try it in a not so noticeable place to see what happens.
