      Green Masking Tape

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but...

For the pro shops out there, I noticed in quite a few photos of projects in various stages, certain components are covered with a light green colored masking tape. I assume the components are taped over to prevent scratches during the assembly process. Where can this tape be purchased and is it essentially the same thing as the blue painters tape available at home stores?

      Thanks!

The blue painters tape has a lower adhesion than green and will work fine. Most shops use green because painter tape is usually not available from the paint/body supply store.

      Cool! Thanks for the info.

FYI... I painted my roll bar but I still have stuff to do that requires me to climb over it and I don't want it to get all scratched up!

I use the 3M blue stuff, same price as the green. But man, sometimes it just works in the opposite direction for me. When I dont want it to hold to a painted surface or bright work it holds like gang busters. Then when I want it to hold firmer it drops right off. All clean surfaces.

When I need protection form adjacent metalwork, like grinding and Im afraid I might slip with the grinder wheel or cutoff wheel I will put a layer of blue down to make lifting easier. Then wrap that in duct tape which has some thickness to it. If a cutoff wheel grazes it, it wont go through. Then it lifts off easily when done with the blue tape underneath. JR

The green stuff is more expensive from what I've seen... and it works well. If you go with the blue stuff, just make sure you get 3M... the other stuff is junk and will bleed.

My experience has been that the green 3M tape has a coating on it that doesn't let the thinners bleed through and soften the glue I have used it for years. Really satisified with it..

In addition to what others have said, the blue home store tape can be a nightmare to remove (once you finally get it to stick) if left on for any length of time...

The green tape is used to for painters shooting laquer (I used to paint houses and we used it for cabinets and such). It (the chemicals) won't eat away at it like the blue tape. That's what I know.

      Blue painters tape

If you go to a home store to get the blue tape be careful. There are 2 different types of blue tape. One has a smoother texture and is not that sticky. The other has a texture and is better to use. The smoother texture tape doesn't stick well at all, when spraying the air pressure will blow the tape off.

This is all good info guys, I'm sure it will be of use to many down the road. I however, am only using the tape to prevent scratching my newly painted roll bar while I finish the interior. The tape will only be on for about another week so I hope it's not a nightmare to remove.
