      Black Paint ideas......

I am working with a friend to paint new sheetmetal for my Harley. (Actually he is doing the painting). We are wanting the base color to be black......like a pure little to none metallic. Then going to put a design over it. Anyone have any suggestions of a black to use or what you have used?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

ppg makes a nice deep rich black. Make sure you use a high grade reducer. If cheap reducer is used could make it a brownish color

I've spent the last week looking for the "best" black to put on a car I'm about to start on and the best I've found was House of Kolor black. I think it is bc-25. It's also cheaper than ppg and dupont. But like 200horse said don't use cheap reducer. HOK base needs to use HOK reducer.

Thanks guys for all the ideas so far. We are painting the tins black and putting real fire over the top. In fact the real fire kit we got has the HOK bc-25 in one of the bottles in the kit.
Thanks for the idea of adding in blue to make it not look brown..i didnt know that either.

I use HOK BC-25 for everything black. By the time you put the real flames over the top, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between blacks.

The blazer is coated in Sherwin William Paint (It was the new ultra 7000 series). The paint has metallic in it.

The stripes also have metallic in them, so they change color depending on the angle you look.

the blue kills the brown I never have had much luck killing the brown in black by adding blue. I think you just need to start with the blackest black that you can

Its what they are made out of. If you put the 2 next to each other you can see the difference.

Spies Hecker FP 1002 (single stage) or FP 2002 (base coat clear coat) are the blackest you can get. The single stage is super deep to go along with it.

If you really want to get crazy (and I love to get crazy with black) you can spray a couple of coats of the single stage, mix the single stage with clear (to make a candy coat) then clear over the top of it.

I have been paiting show cars for over 20 years and this is what looks the best.

Spies Hecker FP 1002 (2 coats)
FP 1002 mixed 50/50 with Spies Hecker 8015 clear (1 coat)
      75% clear and 25% color (1 coat)
      90% clear and 10% color (1 coat)
Spies Hecker 8015 clear (2 coats)

pull the car out of the booth and let it air dry for 3-5 days.
Wet sand the entire car smooth with 800 grit and put it back in the booth.

Spies Hecker 8015 clear (6 coats)

      Color sand (800, 1000, 1200, 1500) then polish

I have won several car shows with this formula.
