      Picking a transmimsion

Looking for a little advice and maybe some experience on a few tranny set ups.First of all its a 2nd gen camaro with a ls2 making a bout 525hp & 510flb for now. First i thought of runnng a T56 or TKO600 but after talking to a friend that has broke his a few times
that has changed my mind for now. I have looked and a few sites saiyng the 700r4 and 4l60E can handle this kind of power. Any one have any experience with ether one? I will be betting on
this car at the strip with slicks and at the road corse.

Bowler 4l60e or 4l80e and twist paddle shifter. When you drive the car you will have a big smile on your face. Give them a call.

First, welcome to the site. Your subject line says "Picking a Transmission", so the first rule is know what you are getting. Avoid companies that pull torque capacity ratings out of thin air. I often wonder if some companies determine torque capacity by using a dart board, a blindfold and some cold ones.

Honest torque capacity ratings are a result of:
      1) A comprehensive list of transmission components and build procedures.
      2) A solid warranty
      3) Application disclosure (i.e slicks or no slicks, racing or not)
      4) A proven track record of real world performance

This thread https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=51063 shows a list of links to some companies that are up front about their transmissions. Visit them all and you will see a trend of real world torque capacity ratings. A consensus.
      1) Start with the list of hard parts as it is the only part of the equation that is truly carved in stone.
      2) Warranties are important, but some companies hedge their bets, since the broken trans must be pulled, shipped back and "analyzed".
      3) Application is critical. For an average NA engine, there is typically a 50 to 100 ft lb variation between slicks that hook and short sidewall tires that don't. Traction makes a huge difference. Most companies prefer to discuss application one on one
      4) Scan message boards and company websites to see which companies are PROVING their transmissions in competition. There is no shortage of racing 4L60's out there. Reputable companies refine their designs based on real world usage.

As for your specific application, your engine "only" produces 510 FtLbs of torque. But you plan on running slicks and hitting the road course. Yes, 4L60E's can be built to handle those requirements. But don't expect that transmission to come at bargain prices since virtually every internal component must be upgraded. Furthermore, quite a bit of time intensive custom blueprinting is required to build the transmission right for downshifting as well as slicks. Ditch the slicks and the margin for reliability increases quite a bit.

      I hope that helps.
      /Steve
