      Surface rust prevention...

      Looking over sites like DSE's I see most of their cars are bare metal while they are built. How do they revent surface rust?? I know there are such products like ospho but I dont think it is long term.

      ospho works really good or just live somewhere dry. that always helps.

      I think that being in a climate controlled garage really helps them

      Gotta be more to it than climate control. Just touching bare metal will have it rusting in just a few hours. I have used Ospho and it works good but it will come off.

      Sounds like the shiz, I have been reading up on it for a little while just had not pulled the trigger and ordered yet.

      I use Picklex. You spray it on bare metal and wipe it around and the metal wont rust.

      wow that Gibbs Brand stuff does sound too good to be true. Has anyone else used it?

      I plan to use it on this car.

      I'm going to finish stripping all of the paint off and leave it sitting in bare metal for a quite a while.

      I like what I've read about it on his website and on the H.A.M.B. forums.

      picklex

      Picklex is a good rust converter and it will protect bare metal. I would advise that when the time comes to paint OR use filler, scratch the surface well and clean with a solvent. You don't want any of it left on the metal.

      I've used Eastwood Metal Wash with good results. One small can makes a lot. Put it in a spray bottle and wipe it down.

      I used Krud Kutters "The must for rust". I sprayed it on and left it on for over a month. I'm recently trying to take it off and it's not as easy as they said it would be. Alot of d/a with 180 grit. It's turned out to be a real pain with this product.

      most of the shops like mine do all the work on the car in bare metal, when the car is media blasted it does not take the phosphorus coating off the metal the way sand does and it does not rust right away, or very fast, sand blasting takes it down to bare metal and will rust very very fast, if that helps, Jim

      After reading this thread several times and thinking of how I don't get rust on things in my garage very often and how it gets there when I do, I came to some simple reasons.

      The one thing I never do anymore is get tempted to open up the room to the outdoors. It is the temp and humidity fluctuations going on rapidly that cause rust. It can happen in a few hrs or even minutes. Yes it is tempting to get an air conditioner in the summer but the shop stays pretty cool most all summer and only needs a fan.

      The next thing is the one that saves your sanity and a lot of work!

      PRIMER/SEALER

      Yes they make a product that if you buy the right stuff will keep your metal from rusting. Yes you might have to remove some of it but you are all going to spend the time to clean off the rust preventatives. The trade off with the primer is you get to have a good start to block it out and find the low spots. You will inherently always block most of the first coat away of any primer if you want a good job.

      So spend your money on primer and not rust preventative and you will be further ahead for the effort involved.

      When it comes to surfaces you are going to paint you want to keep the rust preventing stuff as far away as possible.

      A produt that we use is Inox - Lanex sprayed on the panels, and when you wan't to work on the car -panel, just wipe it over with solvent, works great. just remember any product that you use can't contain SILICON.

      Just wanted to mention that an actual air conditioner will remove humidity from a room and would help prevent rusting, but a swamp cooler would make it worse and a bare car would rust pretty quick.

      The metal wash product is water soluble and wipes off with soap and water or paint prep cleaners.
