It's not '92, but for them getting a CD is FAR easier than downloading pics. And it's faster, and easier to deal with and manipulate.

These folks are helping everyone out. We ought to be thankful for the interest. I for one will be packaging up some material for submission.

I completely disagree with your first statement about what is faster and easier. I don't know of anyone who uses CD's to store and manipulate pictures anymore. Not a soul.

I do agree with your 2nd statement however, and I did not mean to imply otherwise. This is a great opportunity for some people. Maybe it is a nice natural filter for them as many will not make the time (like me) to put photos on a CD and mail it.

MAN! is this that hard? It seems simple to me, follow the directions of the person that is trying to put your rides in a magazine and they're there. If you don't want to follow her directions, don't, and your rides don't appear. Simple to me.

You're unfortunately looking at this like a home PC user. I call it the "Best Buy" mentality. Let's look at the reasons why submission via CD/DVD makes sense, shall we?

      1) Legal. By having us submit via CD and mail, we are clearly providing legal permission to use our images in a commercial publication, and provide evidence that protects the magazines from getting in trouble.

      2) Email. Have you considered the size of the attachments that you would have to submit via email? Example: Each of my images are more than 3mb in size. I may submit 50 images. That's 150mb. Most email systems have limits on file sizes of attachments. For very good reasons. So, my submission would get bounced, and Liz or somebody has to spend valuable time trying to troubleshoot why my submission didn't get in.

      3) Bandwidth. Again - 150mb. Multiply that times the number of of potential submissions? Bandwidth aint cheap in the corporate world.

I'm retired from the military and am in the middle of my second career - which happens to be IT. I run a pretty large global IT operations group. You have no idea how many times people assume that what is best for them in their home MUST be best for the corporate/business world. Just not so. You can buy a 1TB consumer grade network storage device for a few hundred dollars. 1TB of Tier 1 SAN storage such as a Hitachi 9900 class or EMC will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just real world examples.

I'd be willing to bet SERIOUS money that the intent for having us submit via CD is NOT to discourage people from participating.

I hear what you are saying, and even though I understand some of what you typed from a technical standpoint, I typed what I did because I know a lot of people felt that way but were not conveying it well in their posts.

I understand the legal aspect, and I understand the email issues (although gmail allows 20mb free per email - that is not too hard to accommodate). Do you really need to send 50 images?

Anyway, thanks for the thesis and your point of view.

Yes, you do! The magazine is not going to print the few photos YOU feel are approriate. They have a specific idea as to how it will work with their print. They will go through your photos and choose which ones work for them.

Yes, SAN is very expensive. I've actually had app. architects wonder why they couldn't plug in a SCSI drive on a server for increased Disk. He was about laughed out of the Network Ops area.
