LOL. It's not wide angle. That's 76 individual frames shot at full telephoto with a Canon G9 that were stitched together to create that panoramic view of the indoor car show our club is hosting this weekend at the Statehouse Convention Center here in Little Rock. The photographer is my boss. He and I are both old newspaper photographers. I got him access to the "crow's nest" at the show hall and we did that photo today. I thought you guys might enjoy it..

that's pretty cool critter. How did you set it up so that you could zoom in on the different shots?

You have to buy the robot Gigapan system. This is the same stuff they used on the Mars rover from what I understand. The little robot head mounts to a tripod. You have to program the parameters of the shot you want and then you start the sequence. It starts at the top left and begins creating overlapping shots. Then it has to be pulled into a computer (with a LOT of horsepower) to begin the stitching process. A shot like this will take 4-5 hours to "stitch" on a typical PC. After that it has to be uploaded to the gigapan.org web site in order to be viewed.

It's fun to look at. The site has been slow since the inauguration. Someone did a gigapan of the ceremony and the server has been slammed with folks looking for "aunt Betty" in the crowd. ;)

I saw that inauguration pan, the file size is over 2 gigs and it is the equivalent to over 1400 mega pixels!
