Manual steering with Steering Quickener?
72 Monte, front end lightened about 250# 245/60/r15 tires.
I've got a new manual steering box, 5.1 turns lock-to-lock
I'm eyeing a 1.5 Steering Quickener, which would give 3.4 turns LTL.
With a DIY welded up bracket they can be placed inline with the steering shaft.

Bad idea?

01-24-2009 #2I've been considering this too. My duster has a 26:1 steering ratio... And I would like to make it quicker. I know that they are real popular with dirt-track guys. I think if you had the right offset on your wheels to minimize scrub radius it would work just fine.
Does anyone more knowledgeable that I am want to comment? I'd love to know if it'll work.Benjamin

I forget what the 'quick ratio' is i think 2.5 L to L but i know thats the manual box i have on my Firebird. At under 3000lbs with me, front end about 300lbs lighter and only running 4" skinnies up front i stil find it 'difficult' to turn when not moving (i.e. parking spaces, loading it in the trailer) and I'm a pretty strong guy. I have to use both hands to turn the wheel when its not moving i would think it would be much more difficulty with larger tires.
For the cost as that steering quickner and the extra work you could get a different manual box. I think i only paid $150 for my box.1994 Z28 - 13.52@110mph 2.1 60ft T56, bolt-ons, suspension

I think this is a bad idea.
I just put the new Manual steering box, Pitman arm, & rag-joint up for sale here.
