      A New Camaro Book

      Hey everyone,

I’m getting ready to write another book and you can help. The book is going to be a First Generation Camaro Restoration Guide. It will be in full color and high-resolution. I know this isn’t the best website to tailor to the “restoration” crowd, but Pro-Touring cars go through some of the same steps of repair that a restorer may tackle. I can’t show how to mini-tub a Camaro, but I can cover replacing a quarter panel and an outer fenderwell. You can help by giving me ideas of projects you think have been left out or not covered well by other restoration guides you may have in your bookcases.

What restoration books do you have and which one is the best...and WHY? Even though I may have the same books, I'd like to know which books you have on the subject...even the books that aren't on restoring Camaros

What is the worst restoration book you've seen and why was it so bad?

Here's a scan from a restoration book I have in my arsenal. I'm appalled at this rear window repair.

What restoration projects would you like to see included?

      Thanks for your help,
      Tony Huntimer

Roof skin is actually a piece of cake....

Grind the welds out with a die grinder around the window track and drip rail, melt the lead around the quarter seam and yank it off..

It was the easiest panel that I replaced

      JR,
You do some great work. Unfortunately I only have so much say in what ends up on the front cover and S-A Design does all their own artwork in-house.

Thanks for the nice words. I'll make a note of the roof skin. That's a good one!

Here's two Camaro restoration books I have in my collection.
by Tom Currao & Ron Sessions an HP Books title:

Another restoration book that's NOT what I would consider good for restorations, but a pretty cool collection of Hot Rod magazine hop-up articles from the 70's and 80's on first and second gen Camaros (including Herb Adams and John Buttera Camaro articles).

Here's a good reference guide by William (Bill) Burt by Specialty Press (another line for S-A Design) Books:

A REALLY cool reference book sold by S-A Design under a Brooklands Books Title. It's a bunch of really cool old magazine articles on first and second gen Camaros. There's orignal articles on Nickey, Yenko, experimental Chevy 72 Camaro with a turbocharged straight 6, Sunoco, ZL1's, Z-28's and cool road tests against AMX's, Cuda's and Mustang's.

What do you have in your collection?

      Thanks,

Yeah, I figured as much. Its pretty standard in the industry.

I have to tell you I love the Pro Touring book, I got mine a couple months ago and have found it really helpful. Can't wait for the new book!

      A-pillar/cowl replacement.

How about a few pages on the legalities of VIN tags.

Did you post the same ?? at team camaro?

is this pure resto or mods too? G-mod, 3rd gen steering boxes, etc.?

I can't give much advise on this Tony, but what I did find out it is useful to have multiple books.

Like with the Haynes and Chilton manuals, they both cover most basic stuff and a lot of info will be the same....but there are things that one has in it and the other doesn't.

In 2001 I dedicated a page to it on my website to show what I used:
      www.pro-touring.nl page 6

I found the assembly manual also very helpful....might be a tip to refer to?

You could show how to correct poor fitting door gaps by welding in tig rod. I only have a couple of books but I dont remember any of them mentioning that.

In addition to the one'e that you show Tony, I have this one which is good for a sigh every once and a while.

It contains such classic advice as "how to replace a quarter panel without worrying about what's underneath" and "how to chop your first gen".

Yours should be an awesome book.

X2... I really like the body cart idea. I think getting ideas from the forums that other people have been using successfully would be a great help to those diving into this type of thing.

I have that first book by HPBpooks and one other one. I'll have to look for it in this mess of an office. Camaro first I always say.
I agree with you on that repair. I had enough of those rivets in my floorpan when I replaced it. They must have had the same book!!
I've been looking for your book. I saw it on Team Camaro. I'll be ordering one today. Thanks.

You may want to check out the Hot Rod Magazine DVD series "Dream Build Drive, Complete Bodywork and Sheetmetal Preparation" if you can. I have the first 2 and I think they contain some great info and you may give some ideas.
