      New Ford Guy, New Project

Hey everyone, I know this is a GBody forum, and most everyone here is a chevy guy, so I hope its ok to post here, being a ford guy and all....
I have a 1989 Mustang, which I have spent tons of money on, and is currently setup for drag racing. It has never been down the track, and since there are no tracks near me, I would really like to build a pro touring car out of it. I tossed around the idea of buying a 69 camaro, and a 79 camaro, both pro touring cars and already done. But then I would fit in with everyone else. I would like to be different, and do a late model mustang. I need ideas, drive, help, etc... Where should I start? Its really the suspension that has to be changed on the car. I am attaching pictures as well as my car domain page. Please take a look and give me honest opionions on which direction I should lean to start. I also have a 67 mustang, but I would prefer not to tear it up.

      Thanks,

      Dan

I think you're mistaken on the gbody/chevy forum comments. I don't post on here much at all, but I do frequently read the forums.. it's for all kinds. Gorgeous 'stang, btw. Should be an awesome starting point.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I have been searching to see any pro touring mustangs on here, and I havent found one yet. I found one that said it was pro touring, but I definitely dont consider it that. I think I am going to go down an untraveled road with this car..... Any thoughts?

Go over to http://corner-carvers.com/forums/ and poke around (read the rules carefully first before you post). You will find all kinds of information on road racing suspension setups etc there.
Good starting point by the way!

I took a look at the site, thanks. I have considered making a pro touring car with it before, and I got a lot of info off of the steeda site, and the maximum motorsports site. I just wish there was someone else who had an idea on what this car would look like with the tucked wheels, etc...

Nice mustang. I used parts from a 93 to build my first project car. That was a Factory Five Cobra replica. What a blast to build. Bunch of pictures here from when I sold it.

What do you want to change on your car? There are so many places where you can get good parts without laying out a lot of dough.

Do you have disc brakes? You can buy a disc brake conversion kit with all the hardware & special brackets from http://www.northracecars.com/Brakes.html. Richard is a great guy and has been selling conversion kits for years. He'll know about a bunch of other suspension upgrades you can make too.

Coilovers all the way around and some new arms will really get that car to handle. A nice set of 17 or 18's will also change the look of the car. The right backspacing will tuck the tires in a bit too.

Nice pictures, I am going to check out the links now. I have a complete suspension, tubular front end, rear upper and lower fully adjustbale control arms, 9" for rear (rated to 1500 hp) I have a MM front sway bar in already, welded torque boxes, etc... 12 point chromoly cage with drivers swingout, welded through to sub frame connectors. And a ton more. My rearend is narrowed 1" on either side, and i would like to get a rear sway bar, so i am goignto have to get one built. due to the rearend being shortened, I have a crazy offset in the back that I am going to have to get wheels made again.

Should I Minitub the rear to fit a 19" rear wheel? the pics show a 275 / 50/15 drag radial...

What kind of tires are recommended for touring?

I have 4 wheel willwood disc brakes, with new master, new lines, proportioning valve, etc... My brakes are manual, should i go back to a power booster?

What kind of offset do i need in the fron to get the tucked look and not lose driveability? what size rim and tire. I am assuming a 19" rim... Tire?

I should go with a koni coilover system for the entire car. Right now I have Ford C Springs. I had Eibach drag launch, but was real soft, and the car squatted to much.

Should I make the wipers functional. I dont have the wiper motor anymore, and was supposed to send the car to the bodyshop to finish smoothing the engine bay.

Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for all the help...

      Dan

That's a beautiful stang! I don't think you'll get any grief here about being a Ford guy...everyone here seems to just be Car guys in general! Not sure about mintubbing it, guess it depends on how wide a rear tire you're looking to run. My buddy has coilovers front & rear on his '92 and loves the set up...not sure what brand system he has though.

I have been looking for the cover story on either that red car, and preferrably the silver one. Does anyone know where it is? I have searched relatively everywhere.

I wanted to put black wheels on the car, so I used photoshop on this other car. What do you guys think. I am going to go with 19" in the back, and 18" up front. Like, Dislike?

Well, real question is, do you like it? Build the car so it makes you grin, it's you money and time. If I grin too, it's just gravy

Please consider Balck with a polished or color matching lip. Solid Black, just, does not look clean, color matched or polished lips on black wheels PoP a whole lot better!IMO It really Breaks the line between the tire and RiM and just looks Smok'N!
