      stainless steel welding

      i want to add some v-band clamps from my downpipe to the cat. can the stainless steel band be welded to steel tubing?

      You bet. Use stainless wire or rod for enhanced corrosion protection.

      IIRC, 308 stainless is the best alloy for joining stainless to steel.

      Actually, 309 would be preferred for dissimilar metals.

      Ok, that sounds right. I knew it was 8 or 9. It's too damn cold to go out and dig through my bucket and see what I bought back when I was doing this. I actually typed 309 first and edited. Goes to show that old saying, "your first answer is usually the right one" may have some merit.

      Never heard of using 312.

      most definitly 309 is the rod you are looking for.reg steel filler rod will work to but will rust the stainless rod will also work but will crack later 309 is your best choice.:bsjerk:

      No way it absolutely CAN NOT be welded together! Stainless and regular steel have severely different melting points! Stainless must be welded with AC current.













      Hahahaha, just kidding! Go for it, it's possible. I bet everyone will remember it's possible now!
