CD Scratch Repair

Has anybody ever used any of the compact disc scratch repair products on the market ??
I've got some of my favorite , out-of-print , CD's that have been scratched by a faulty cd player and I want to fix the deep scratches.
Any product reviews ???

I have used a cheap one. It worked OK on some minor scratches, but deep scratches may not come out.

Have you tried to rip to your PC? Sometimes CD drives will read discs that a normal CD player won't. If that works, then you could burn a new disc.

That is one of the reasons that I have all of my CD's backed up onto my PC and several portable hard drives. Well, that and I hate carrying CD's around.

What brand of repair product did you use ??

These are not CD ROM's , but audio - music Cd's.
I don't even have a CD or DVD reader or burner in my computer at home.
I'm old school.

I had an in-dash Pioneer Super Tuner that put some deep scratches on several of my favorite music Cd's.
Now , they skip in certain spots.

I can't listen to Muddy Waters - Hard Again.
Or James Brown- Greatest Hits.
Or Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power.

If you do fix it, I would immediately extract the songs off the cd and either convert them to mp3s or burn another cd.

Believe it or not I have used Meguairs PlastiX, every once in a while it doesn't work but most of the time it does.

You need to up grade I ripped my entire CD collection to my laptop and then sold the cd's. I have not to worry about a cd again if its damaged or lost I can just make anouther.

I have heard toothpaste works (polishes out scratches since it is very slightly abrasive), and it's basically free. I have never had to do this myself, but that is what I heard. Might be worth a try, maybe on a disc you don't care to much about first.

I don't remember. It was a cheap plastic thing that held the disc and had really fine abrasive wheel. I think I saw it at Walmart. It's been years ago.

I have also just taken plastic polish or even rubbing compound or polishing compound to take out scratches and then put on a pure wax (once you got most of the scratches out). But first hold the disk up to a light and if you see any scratches or pin holes that show light through the disk you cannot fix those. On most cds the foil or what ever is in there is off centered to the back of the cd so there is usally plenty of room to sand, polish or what ever you want to do.

I've saved a few this way. Get your finger wet and put a little toothpaste on it and rub lightly. Toothpaste is a real fine rubbing compound.

Jeff, here is my advice.....

Ipod.

I haven't listened to a CD in 4 years. When I go to buy music, I go to Itunes.

Get that music on an Ipod and don't look back.

Take it to a gaming type store they have a machine to fix their games.

Basicly it spins the disc with an abrasive on it.Should only be a couple bucks / free if you bs with them.

SKIP DOCTOR by Digital Innovations. Works great, I have fixed several of my hard to replace cds.

I've had good luck with pure carnuba wax and microfiber cloths

We were bored at work one day so we came up with this. A 3" air polisher with 3M pefect it 3 compound works great. A slightly agressive clener wax may work well too when done by hand.
