Mechanical to electric speedo conversion

As of now, my best option is Cable X. However, I would like to know if anybody can convert a stock mechanical speedo to an electric one or at least retain the stock gauge face and relative same numerical increments? I contacted classic instruments and tehy said it would run 800-1500 if they could do it. the car in question is a 78 t/a. any 70-81 firebird would be the same thouugh.

I ordered Cable X after consulting a few gauge shops. this seems to be the best option.

Just some advice from someone who uses a cable x: Don't use a metal jacketed speedo cable, it will sound like you have an egg-beater under the dash. Have a speedo shop shorten your factory cable.

Redline gauge works can convert your factory speedo to an electric version, and it will still look original.

I researched this for quite a while when I put in my 6spd and have yet to come up with a good solution. I have read too many complaints with the Cable-X. So for now I figure it out my gear & rpm...

I am in the process of doing the same thing, I found a late 80's Firebird speedo is electronic & pretty close to the Monte face. I took the electronic head off of the F body one, redesigned the Monte face so it still looks like it is for the Monte, but the angles between 0 & 120 match the Firebird one. Now I am trying to figure out how to get it on the Monte face. I have tried to find some way of getting it on a water release type decal, with no luck. I guess I am going to have it printed as a photograph, cut it out & glue it on the Monte face.

great - I which I would have known these things before I order it. Murphy's Law in effect. anyhow, well see what it does. I'll keep the cable shortening thing in mind.

as for the monte guage, that is not a bad though, however I will be needing one that goes slightly higher. 160-200 range. the previous owner got tired of burring the 100 mark so he installed a 50% transducer so for every one mph the car was going, the speedo read half of that. the gauge face plate was also revised to show the correct theretical speed.

I talked to Shannon from Redline gauges yesterday at SEMA about this exact topic. I too want to keep the stock gauge face yet have an electronic movement to match the LS1 ECM output.

For about $250 he will do the complete conversion and it will look just like factory. Takes about 3-4 days to do the swap. This is for a basic retrofit, no custom gauge facing.

This is a no-brainer for me.
