I need help.

Im building a 1949 F1 for a customer and he wants me to install a audio setup. I dont know anything about all new up to date stuff.

We just need a CD player, with the MP3 stuff. door speakers, and im thinking like a 8" or 10" sub behind the seat.

I need help on what brand to get or stay away from.

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X592 head unit is an excellent unit, has a 24-bit DA converter which is almost unheard of in car stereos, has MP3, USB input (can use thumb drives instead of CDs), built-in iPod controls (control from the faceplate), and built-in crossovers for subs. At only $120, it's the steal of the century! Check it out at IkeSound.com , as well as other componenets. Alpine would be my personal next choice, but you will be spending more money to get what you do with the Kenwood.

For door speakers, run the largest ones you can, as high in the door as you can. The component systems have better clarity if you can squeeze it.

For a sub, run a behind the seat enclosure for something like an S10 or other small pickup. You will need an additional amp if you're going to run a sub(s), pick one that's rated for the sub itself.

Here's a pic of a truck sub box that goes behind the seat. Nice thing is you can always take it out if you need the space, and still listen to the stereo without it. Also, keep in mind, when you use a ported sub enclosure, your power demands are roughly half of a sealed box, making the amp less expensive. For example, a 10" sub rated for 300w cna run great in a ported box (or free-air) at 150w.

I know that Kicker makes a line of speakers called "solo-baric" and they function at peak efficiency in much much smaller enclosures than other subs. Which is great news for truck owners, there's not a load of room behind the seats.

If I'm not mistaken, the early trucks like that actually have a double-wall in the corners of the cab, and you may even be able to mount a sub in one of those.

I do know that you can get amazing sound out of some kicker "ks" series 4x10s (that's what we used in my dad's 57 chevy truck in the cab corners.) The sound is so good, he doesnt' need a subwoofer!

I run Pioneer headunits in everything, the new units have a USB port to run all kinds of MP3 players from. It will even control an iPod directly form the remote.
Solo-barics are great subs but kind of pricey. If he has the cash Kicker is a great way to go for speakers.

If the interior of the 1949 F1 is trying to retain a more original look, you should check out Custon Auto Sound for the head unit. I have been eye balling the USA-630 for my 64 Chevy C10.

You can also look up Aura Bass Shakers. They thump the the body and fit much tighter spots and dont require a lot of amp to run.
