Hardboard Headliner

I have a '71 Camaro and think that using a hardboard headliner ('73 and up) would give more options for matching interior colors. How do these attach as compared to the bow style? Thanks.

initially when installing it, the first thing that attaches it to the roof would be the 2 screws for the dome light bezel. Then the front and rear window trim and then side trim......all four sides help in holding it up........but primarily the dome light and the front and rear window trim

Hmm, so same as the edges of the bow type I have now. I would guess that they would be interchangable, but will have to measure. thanks.

It there a year of the cardboard headliners that don't have the cutout for the shoulder retracting unit? I did the swap on my 71, and fab'd a pece in there, but would be better to have a one-piece. Source for these?

the hardboard headliner (allegedly) came in late '73, although I have a March of '73 build date, that is what I have.... mine do NOT have the cutout for the seatbelt retractors. These were phased in, to go on the '74's.

now..... the ABS repop's..........are hit and miss for a good fit, but I have had 2 tries with the repops from Classic Industries, and although Classic was extremely accomodating with the fitment issues, I would glass in a filler piece as best as you can and stick with your original piece...........that's would I did.....kept the original.

Well, I used pieces of cardboard to fill it in, and through the material you can kind of see the parting line. Wish I could find an original w/o the cutouts...

Any issues with the swap other than the seat belt cutout?

Actually it was a great move to swap it with the carb board type. I got way more headroom, and it baffles sound better. I peeled the factory stuff off, shot it with trim adhesive, and covered it with a better material. I'm temped to cover the rear side panels too, since the dye always seems to wear off!

I sold the headliner bows and clips and got a decent penny for those, making it even a sweeter 'upgrade'.
