Smokin SS build
Just an update on the Smokin SS build: the guys got the major part of the refinishing done, the chassis and inner body parts were coated with U-Pol’s Raptor – a tint-able urethane product. Raptor’s system uses 2 ounces of color per quart. Hot Hues Galaxy Blue was used with Raptor under the front fenders, firewall, floor-broad and inner quarter panels. The interior area was finished with a late model GM Slate Gray and the tint-able Raptor reduced about 15%. The dash, door panels and quarter trim panels were sprayed with Black U-Pol Raptor in a non-reduced form. This duplicated a textured leather look on the custom built aluminum panels. The exterior was shot with Hot Hues Base Coat System by DuPont which included the Galaxy Blue Base, SS stripes and lower body treatments shot with Super Jet Black and trimmed with Corvette Competition Yellow. The top coat clear was the HHC-5000 urethane Hot Clear from Hot Hues.
This car is being built for all-out performance. Weight has been a big part of the planning as far as components go. Rotating weight has been reviewed in choosing every component. Aluminum hubs, light weight rotors, ring gear, locker, driveline, flywheel clutch assembly, even wheels all have been taken into consideration. As the components have been assembled overall weight has also been a topic of concern. Chassis design, component design, even interior panels, seats, body panels, windows – were all built with lightweight materials and parameters. The chassis design includes a lot of versatility and adjustability. Pro-Touring events vary from show to show and many times challenges are added in to spice things up. When asked about doing this project the main objective was to build a car that could do everything well with just a few changes. This car has the capability of changing the caster, camber, settings in just minutes. The front roll centers and rear roll center have been mapped, so depending on the circumstances each could be changed to make the car handle its best. The chassis also has been designed so weight balance from front to rear can be changed with the movement of onboard ballast. The wheel base of the car was extended to 110 inches, the tread width will fall in around 61 inches front with the rear tread coming in at 59 ½ inches. The 5 inch offset wheels allow us to tuck the 10 inch tire inward giving us a minimum amount of scrub. The overall front tire out-to-out width is 72 inches, with the rear coming in at 70 ½ inches. The rear suspension utilizing the NASCAR type truck arm set-up allows us to use a rear track bar as a centering devise and the versatility to raise it or lower it to control roll or forward bite. The adjustability allows us also to steer the rear by changing mounting slugs, a handling tool used on road courses nationwide. These are just some of the things we have built into the car.
