      Hot-Rod "ism's"

Thought it might be fun to catalog some of the odd coloquialisms that exist in Hot-Rodding.

Heck, I think the term "HOT-ROD" itself qualifies.

      One of my favorites:

"Runs like a raped ape." or "Runs like a stripe'ed a$$ed ape."

The imagery always kinda makes me laugh.

      What are your favorites?

"peg-leg rearend" always struck me as an odd analogy. Understood though.

The term "bench racing" comes to mind. Nice way to say "BSing and boasting"

      "hit the hooks/binders"

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

I work in a speed shop, if I hear one more person call nitrous "Naws" I may go postal. And yeah, people still come in looking for 3/4 race cams.
Me and the other counter guy keep a list:
      Crowl Induction scoop (cowl induction)
      Skributer (distributor)
MDS box (any MSD ignition box)
Calibrated hose (braided line, like Earls etc.)
      Fool Pump
And everyone needs a 750 double pumper.

Too many years in the aftemarket checking in.

Man, some people destroy brand names and parts.

"Yeah, I gotta 350 four bolt outta truck"

"Yeah I need some ARP head bolts" Not A-R-P

"I'd like to tub my 13 second car out"

"I wanna tunnel ram with dual CLODS"

"I wanna a gear drive for the sound it makes"

"I wanna beat Mustangs and Camaros"

      "I got a Chevy 350 big block"

"I want my car to sound like a Mustang"

"Yeah I wanna set of Flow daddys (Flowmasters) for my Cutlass"

Dude, I worked at the Super Shops down here in Charleston a while back and I can't tell you how many times I heard someone wanting a new "skributer". Too funny.

We had a guy down here they called MSD. I'll let you figure out why.

Crane made a hyd. cam for the sbc that actually said "3/4 race cam" on the end of the box. I don't work in the industry anymore so I don't know if they still do, but up until a few years ago it was still being made. It was always funny to have an older guy come in & say "Gimme a 3/4 race cam for a small block shivvy", and I'd give them one. They'd plop the cash down & leave without asking specs, looking at the cam card or anything.

Anybody ever had a "three hole Buick", or for the elite crowd, perhaps a "four hole Buick" depending on the front fender trim.

Man, dat homey got himself a 3 hole Buick!

      Yes, it's fast...no, you can't drive it.

Speaking of Buicks, ever have a "deuce and a quarter"?

Oh yeah, and I've heard the term "full house" before I assume relating to the engine, but never quite understood what it meant. Old school 50's or 60's?

I always took that to mean it was a full race engine like you would find in a drag car......like 12.5 to 1s, full race cam (as opposed to 3/4 lol!) tunnel ram etc......sometimes guys would take their "full house" drag car out, slap some plates on and go match race after midnight sort of thing......you know, all hush hush
