'89 Mustang - Air Ride & New Wheels

I've been trying to figure out what wheels to put on my car for a few years now. I didn't want to spend a ton of money though either. I finally pulled the trigger and bought some Black Bullit Replicas. The rears are 17X9" with 255/45 tires and the fronts are 17X8" with 235/45 tires. I put Kumho Ecsta MX tires on it. They get really good reviews and are affordable too. I got all for for under $600 from tirerack.com.

I've tried a few different bumpstops on the top of the struts, but they aren't designed to be able to support the entire weight of the car so needles to say, they didn't work very well. I spoke with Darren at air ride and he suggested that I space the bag up and use the internal bumpstop that is built into the bag. Part of my problem is that I'm running Steeda X2 taller balljoints, which lowers the car about 1/2". The ratio of the spring mount location to the balljoint is about right at 2:1. ie: for each 1/2" I space the spring up, the balljoint will move 1". I had some 4" diameter, 1/" thick spacers machined and they turned out to work just right.

Anyway, here are some pics of the car. I'm still waiting on the center caps. I ordered plain black ones. The ones that come with these replica wheels are super stupid looking!

Notice how they don't stick out past the wheel opening - that's a pet peeve of mine. You see it often on Fox Mustangs

Here are a couple a ride height

Thanks for the compliments. I'm pretty happy with how it looks.

Darren - I will definitely be at RTH again this year.

The ride is much better than with the Eibach lowering springs that it had in it prior to the air ride. I really like the adjustability for the street and it looks cool slammed. The only issues I ran into was the "aired down" height in the front. Initially it was entirely too low. This was partly due to, as I mentioned above, the taller balljoints. The tires still touch the plastic inner aprons when it's deflated, but my concern was that in the case of a failure while driving, that the crossmember and/or headers didn't drag because I wouldn't be able to control it. I'm sure there would still be some damage if I had a failure, but I feel confident that I could control the car. I was pretty careful when running my lines, so they shouldn't be prone to failure, but you never know - better safe than sorry!

$600 for the tires. $510 for the wheels shipped to my door. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the improvement for the money.

Nice clean fox body I am a Chevy guy at heart ( don’t tell anyone but I owned a 85 Florida state trooper car for a couple of years I pick up for peanuts (I think it only had 69 k on it and came with the black and tan set up and police light on the a pillar and loved it never should have sold it who knew that they would be worth so much)

Yes I like the wheel and rim set up and the fact that it does not stick out of the fender wells …….

What did you use for 5 lug conversion stuff? I used 94 spindles in front with 94 Balljoints and in the rear i am using a 96 Gt rear axle. Trying to get away from that sucked in wheel look also.
