      Trend setter in pro-touring builders?

Anyone have details about this custom dash in this Camaro? I'd like to order the exact same setup.

Wood is good and the things you can do go beyond steel for sure.

The problem with wood in a car is that it can split and crack. One of the biggest problems when it comes to putting wood in a vehicle is the climate. You have to make sure you seal the wood totally on both sides and in equal amounts. Fine furniture gets away with more layers of sealing on one side because we live in more climate controlled environments than our vehicles. Even if you seal wood on both sides but not equally you can get warpage over a period of time referred to as cupping by a good cabinetmaker.

So if you are going to use wood do it right or you will have problems.

The other thing about wood is that in an accident it can become a very dangerous piece of debris if the accident is violent enough to reach the interior. The way interiors are designed today they are much better than they used to be when they first came out with all of the plastics but they still can become hazardous when the worst happens.

All that said, wood can be sooooo beautiful especially the burled sections of any kind of tree.Veneers on particle board can be a good solution to eliminate the above problems

The time was the late 70's. As most hot rod critics looked at present trends with much dismay thinking much like rock music, hotrods were dead.

Then a young handy whipper snapper by the name of Bob Villa had a vison with the gleam in his eye of offering something new to the hotrod market. With his magical tools, a powerful lust for nature's building block of wood, and keen inspiration brought forth by the hotrod vans in the 70's Bob began to construct the vison that awoke him from a dream.

It's been said that Bob doesn't remember building the dash as it is possible for some people to black out in a time of utter genuis and Bob felt this was that time.

The car debuted at Sema in the fall of 1980 on display in the Billy Bob's mullet edition rear fender flare booth with a quiet debut. Bob stood by with much dismay as most people snickered at his woody masterpiece and his dream went down in flames.

After Sema and quite discouraged Bob turned his efforts towards repair while starting a popular television show based on home repair.

Some argue Bob's wooden creations like the dashboard, and many others including a fully functioning human heart made of wood were much before his time.

Thank you for reading behind the dash. The saga of Bob Villa.
