Lee steering box?
in an earlier forum someone mentioned a "lee equipped" car when i asked about quick ratio steering boxes for my 70 nova. im just wondering what lee is? a brand or type?

It is a company. Tom Lee. Same box as sold by SC&C and ATS (just diff. internal stops). The guy is a legend in the steering gear biz and outfits NASCAR teams.

Yep, Tom Lee is THE man when it comes to steering gear. He and his crew have been doing nothing but racing and high performance steering gear for 45 years. When GM has a steering problem they can`t figure out they call Tom. Lee still does things the old fashioned way,one box at a time,individually blueprinted and dynoed. Each one built for an individual car/order. We`ve used just about every box you can think of over the years and we now use and sell Lee exclusively. Their 670 boxes that use modern rack and pinion hydraulic components are particularly outstanding. Mark SC&C

hey marcus is that 800 series lee come in a manual steering app. and if it is do u think it would be ok to run in my 70 nova? someone else told me it would be like steering a brick but i could care less about power steering as long as the ratio is quicker.

If you have, or will, upgrade your suspension to run a lot of caster, like many do here, it will be a huge effort to steer without power steering.

If you buy the Lee box, call Lee and get the power steering pump pressure valves orifice size and drill your stock unit out. They need more fluid capacity than the stock box....

The Lee boxes are individually calibrated to each application. They don`t require a higher pressure or higher volume pump but they do require a pump that`s at least working 100%. A 40 year old stock pump may not be anymore so a fresh one may be in order or you can change the valve on the output side which can help. Lee`s racing boxes are calibrated to slightly higher pressure (1450psi vs. 1350psi). They`ll work with a std. pump but are more responsive with a higher output pump. Mark SC&C

I needed to open the orifice size at the pressure valve on my factory pump to 5/32". Now it's turns a little too easy, but I think adding 3 to 4 degrees positive caster will change things.
