Once you have a decent ecm how do you find the best timing?

Once I get a decent ecm wether it be a commander 950 or whatever, how do I find the best timing? SHould I perhaps hook up the ecm so it does fuel only for a while until I get that just right and then do the ignition part? Will a knock sensor alone be enough to tell me if I have too much timing? I don't know of any dyno around here.

      Ignition Timing

Depending on what ECM and what type of ignition you have, the instructions for that ECM will tell you how to set up the ignition / timing.
