Need help with my winter beater too.

Ok, I'm not trying to abuse the emergency room but my backup car doesn't work either so I have nothing I can drive now. The battery drains while driving it. It is a 82 volvo so it has a voltage regulator seperate from the alternator. I don't know how to go about figuring out if the problem is the alternator or the voltage regulator. Could I get some help please? thanks
