      AOD for Pontiac 455?

I am new to this forum but it looks like there is a wealth of info here. The need for greater fuel economy is an ever increasing issue so I am interested in replacing the TH400 in my pickup. Does anyone know of an AOD that will bolt up to a Pontiac 455?
      Thanks

The 2004r would be the best option for you. Besides having that BOP bellhousing, the trans mount is in the same location as in a short shaft TH400. You will need a new yolk and probably a new driveshaft. Since it is operated be TV cable, I would suggest going with the TV MAde EZ kit by BowTie Overdrives, thought there are several kits available for both this and converter lock up functions. The gear spread is better (closer) than the 700r4 with a taller overdrive for better freeway cruising. They can also be built to handle pretty stupid power levels, as witnessed in Buick Grand Nationals, T-Types, and GNXs.

Thanks for your advice. This sounds just like what I was hoping to find. I have one stupid question. What years or vehicles was the 2004r used in?

mid to late 80's Turbo Buicks and Monte Carlo SS's are considered to be the better junkyard selections. California Performance Transmission builds some nice ones, Turbo Buick websites have lots of tech on them.

Thanks. I'd better get searching. I figure there will be more than a few folks ready to improve their older vehicle's mileage and these may get hard to find.

I thought so too, but they really screwed up my buddy's car (he's on here sometimes).

They either set it with too much line pressure or ?, but it took out his thrust bearing and crank.

      What a mess.

You also can do a 4L60e / 4L80E with a adapter from Bowler transmissions.

Your other option, keep the TH-400 and bolt-in a Gear Vendors OD unit. This will keep your existing (and bullet-proof) TH-400 and give you a separate gear for each of the three offered by the 400.

but is 3k add on to the th400

you can buy a built 200 for 2k or build it for a grand

or do a 4l80e controller and a shift kit for about 1k both would hold up all day long to it

2004r though would be best its light its small has the best od and yields best fuel mpg
