Can Anyone recommend a good Electrical Breakout Block?

      Hi,

I moved my battery to the trunk and then sent a wire forward to the starter and one to the stereo. I wired off the starter to supply power to the original wiring harness (where the battery used to sit).

I added a MSD 6AL box and I am now adding electric fans. I am concerned about pulling even more amps through the single cable running to the starter.

Is it a problem to use the Starter Solenoid as the terminal block for everything else?

Since this may be a problem I am considering running a second cable forward from the battery to some kind of 'terminal block'/'Break out block' that I could then send power to the fans, MSD Box and the rest of the car.

      Is this overkill?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a seal-able Terminal block/box? (This would offer a single point to break out the main harness power, fan power, MSD power, etc... from)

(I guess this means it is time to install the AAW harness that is sitting on the shelf )

I wouldn't connect everything to the starter.

      I used one of these:

From http://wiringproducts.com/index1.html just search "Distribution Block"

Do not use your starter as a distribution block. I use these adn they work great.

I went to a high end car stereo shop and got some power distribution blocks. They have a 0-2ga input with 4ga outputs. I bought two and mounted them on both front inner wheel wells hidden from sight. The right side runs to the starter and main wiring harness and the left provides power to the electric fans, MSD and couple other things.

I tried this. They had a REALLY nice block (not sealed) for $60. Seems like a little much.

Eville and Rocketrod, thanks for the links. Rocketrod, that link had a pretty good idea with having one breakout under the hood and one under the dash. Eville, that is a nice looking block...

Thanks guys. I will order some of the linked ones...

This is an old thread, but still valid and helped me a lot. I ordered a distribution block for the interior and exterior. So, since you don't recommend running wires off the starter, where do you recommend? Or can I run a one smaller gauge wire from the starter to this distribution block. I could do the battery, but I have a rear mount battery with side posts...a possibility but I'm hoping for another alternative. Thanks, Jon

What's the rationale for not running the wires off the starter?

The problem with all the wires tapped off the starter is simply that you have a bunch of wires in an area where they see a good deal of heat down by the headers not to mention it is inconvenient to access. By using a remote power tap you can locate it in an easy to reach location such as the firewall and you only have to run one heavy wire off the starter and all the accessory wires can be easily installed on the tap. If you like you can power the tap directly off the battery.

so its not so much running all the current through the starter, but rather running all the wires themselves to the starter?
