We are trying the same where I live, First find a large place that allows and welcomes you, must be on a well traveled road. Make sure your first one is highly advertised with flyers, newspaper, etc. Make sure you keep the reins on loud stereos, announce over an intercom that burn outs and show offs will not be tolerated, and try to have a mild music source and work out bathroom details prior to the event. Most businesses welcome the business they receive from participants and spectators..

Back in college I worked at an auto parts store and the guys who ran the local cruise in's came to all the local stores (Autozone, Kragen, Napa, etc) and got weekly donations that were raffled off each week. Was relatively minor stuff usually, jack stands, case of oil, etc. Just an idea to pursue as you guys organize. EDIT: forgot to mention that in exchange for the donations the obviously announced who the gift came from during the raffle and during the cruise night they had the items on display with banners from the places that donated them.

I'd say the hardest part is finding a location that welcomes you.

The cruise night above I mentioned was long standing for years and was hosted by a Jaspers however, it is now shut down as the other businesses in the lot didn't benefit like Jaspers did and finally were able to put a stop to it.

It also was a self building thing. I was around when it was relatively new and it would take up 3 rows in the parking lot. Towards the end it was taking up all 7 main rows and spectators filled the rest of the sides and part of a grocery store lot across the street.

Ditto Chad's comments on the venue.

One venue that seemed to work for the car club I used to be in was a restaurant. Find one that needs a shot of business on a Saturday night. Start early, end early (5-9pm max). No burnouts, etc. allowed our you're not let back in.
