Help, my car sounds terrible!

Finally got my Cutlass fired up the other day, and I hate the sound.

It sounds very cheap and raspy, like an old pick up truck with glass packs. I want more of a throaty rumble.

Here is my set up:

10.0:1 350 Olds, with solid cam
Duration @ .050
-239 intake -244 exhaust
Lift
-.533 intake -.557 exhaust
Separation 108

Magnaflow 2.5 system with X-pipe



I have a feeling the sound issue is a combo of the X-pipe and straight thru style Magnaflow mufflers. (which is really a glorified glass pack, right?)

I'm thinking changing to a chambered style muffler will help bring out the rumble sound. It sounds nice at idle, but revving and any load it sounds terrible.

Forgot to add... I've had Hooker AeroChamber mufflers on a stock 350 in the past, and they sounded really nice.

If I change out the mufflers, I'll use either the AeroChambers or Thrush Welded 2-chamber mufflers. Any opinions on either?

we just put spin tech pro streets. Loud as heck outside but sounds nasty. Inside its fine with no drone and with the od tranny, and dynamat highway driving is fine.

from what i have been told its the x pipe it gives it that raspy sound. my chevelle kinda sounds the same way but im running dynomax bullets

I agree with you that does sound bad, reminds me of some raspy rusted out redneck truck, sounded great at idle though. I personally love Magnaflow mufflers, so I think it could be the x-pipe, try an H setup and see what happens...or maybe try some chambered mufflers. But that is odd, I've heard plenty of x-pipe and Magnaflow combos and none sounded like that

i would go with diff mufflers both my dad and me have x pipes i like that sound but i think it makes a big difference on what mufflers you have on there also

In the process of putting some 2-chamber Thrush welded mufflers on there. Just fired it up with the X-pipe and no mufflers... oh man! If I could get it to sound just like that, but not as loud!

Sounds like magnaflows to me. I have heard very few sets that sound good. My personal favorite for the $$ is Dynomax Welded Ultraflows. Does sound wicked at idle though.

Hooker aero's should fix this or tahe the tailpipes off and put turn down's on it Bob

What did you do to fix it, I'm building a 3" X pipe with Magnaflows with Tailpipes, I'm hoping it won't sound like a 70's Ford Station wagon with 1 5/8 pipe with glass packs

I have turn downs after the mufflers and I wouldn't say they are real loud but they do rumble pretty good.

On my 327 I have Headman headers followed by the Magna flow H pipe out to Magnaflow mufflers blowing out of down turns. It's a 2.5" system and it sounds sweet. Sounds like the X pipe.

Changed to the Magnaflows not wanting Flowmasters anymore, looking for something new with the manderal pipe and X pipe,

flowmaster two chambers just have that classic V8 musclecar sound. they don't flow as well as some others, but the looks you get at stoplights may them so worth it. Cams sound great and they're music to everyones ears while your cruising. this is why I stuck with the h pipe, it does give a deeper musclecar sound.
