Comments / advice request on turbo / TBI system

I'm finishing a turbo charged 67 camaro that I started and sidelined about 10+ years ago.

I trying to determine how well all the turbo and fuel induction parts will work together that I had purchased years ago. I'd rather not rebuy a whole new turbo kit and fuel induction system, but I will if this setup is likely to perform poorly.

Here is what I have. Some info is a little sketchy as I'm going from memory (still looking for some paperwork):
      • Motor built by Ed Hale Automotive in San Diego, CA
      • 327 SBC bored ~.030 over with forged turbo pistons ~8.5ish:1
      • Original 327 forged steel crank
      • 2 bolt studded mains
      • Eagle forged rods that can handle 1000hp
      • Bottom end blueprinted/balanced
      • Original cast iron heads with hardened valve inserts, stainless valves (oversize if I recall), heavy duty pushrods, 1.6:1 roller rockers, heavy duty valve springs
      • Isky Turbo profile 201-TA cam and hydraulic lifters
      • Dual roller timing chain
      • High volume oil pump
      • 7 quart Moroso oil pan w/ sump and windage tray
      • Weiand aluminum manifold port matched to heads
I'm planning on selling my fully rebuilt Muncie M20 and installing a TKO-600.

Here's the parts I'm worried about working well as a system.
      • Rajay single turbo 3AA1EE90B1 in pristine condition, barely used.
      • Cast iron manifolds. One w/ turbo mount flange. Port matched to heads.
      • Cross over pipe that routes behind the oil pan.
      • Turbo City #970-101 modified TBI fuel injection kit w/:
        • 2" TBI unit with 68 lb injectors
        • computer (Delco electronics) Vin 20K w/ custom chip and custom programmed for my motor (SVC # 01227747)
        • wiring harness w/ lots of sensors
      • AC Delco early 90's electronic distributor recommended for the TBI system.
      • Draw through adapter that sits under the throttle body.
      • Deltagate Wastegate #10101-7FF125 7-9 psi
      • Mallory fuel pressure regulator # 4309 3-12psi
Some of the parts I don't have yet:
      • Boost control regulator
      • fuel pump(s)
      • Bypass valve
      • Wideband O2
      • Gauges
      • Intercooler
I'd like to make about 550hp at the crank with tolerable turbo lag.

Any comments on how well the turbo and fuel system is likely to work ?

The TBI system is advertised as limited to about 400hp. Does that sound accurate and is that likely a airflow / CFM limitation in the TBI that is not upgradeable ?

Should I convert to a plenum blow through ? I assume this would be inexpensive and would cut down on turbo lag and fuel atomization issues.

Should I bite the bullet and go with a STS turbo kit or other moderately priced turbo kit ?

I have a Camaro 12-bolt rear with 3:42 gears. If I recall the differential is a GM one. The housing was straightened and the welds were beefed up.

==> UPDATE -> selling the TBI kit and purchasing a MPI kit. Also, likely to upgrade the turbo to a more modern one, using blow through instead of draw through, and

That's a lot to digest at once. I peronally think the log type manifolds as long as they are good quality, are fine. Also they could be run until, (if ever), they had to be replaced with custom peices. The turbo is an older unit,(I just dealt with an old kit for a bike with one), it should work fine, for what you're doing. The heads could be a bottleneck, also aluminum would help with heat, and detonation. The draw thru, could be trouble, but I've never seen one that ran, and don't know it's limitations. The TBI could also be a bit small, ther have been a bunch of upgrades for them in recent years. I've just recently started building my first, a TBI S10 V8. The muncie should be stronger, Tko drives WAY better. Lastly your stock rear should hold up just fine. I've run a bunch of stock 12 bolts with more power than you're after with no problems at all. If you're worried, check it out, maybe change the posi clutches, and add aftermarket axles. I don't think you'd have any trouble meeting your goals with what you have. The problem is most places don't keep up on older stuff and want you to replace it all, instead of giving advice on how to make it work, or work better. In my opinion if it was running as is, even if you were'nt happy with the performance, it could be sold off as a running unit, to help finance an upgrade.

      Budget control

I'd be satisfied with horsepower in the 400 to 500 HP range for now.

Yes, I have budgeted the parts to switch to a blow through.

I agree that the TBI may be too small. Are TBI units sometimes interchangeable without swapping out the ECU and harness ?

A few years down the road, I might bite the bullet and spring for a dual turbo installation (maybe an STS rear mount kit), upgraded fuel injection / tuning system, aluminum heads, and a bulletproof rear end. All that is in the neighborhood of $13.5K. Given I'm putting about $40K to $45K into this car this year, I want to control the budget. My wife is not too happy about how much this is costing. I have about 15K into the car from prior years work. By the end of this year, I'll have $55 to 60K in the car.

True, a non-boosted car is much cheaper to build HP. I'm just not fond of the decreased gas mileage, added noise (turbos w/ mufflers are quieter), and decreased driveability. I will drive this car quite a bit. But, if I can't get my existing turbo and fuel induction to work for $2K to 3K, I may switch to the traditional route.

I could ask my wife to go back to work to properly build it ! Err...Lorena Bobbit comes to mind LOL.

      Thanks for the feedback !

I bought a Holley 670 Cfm TBI unit. It says it'll work with O.E. parts. The tuning might be off a little, but it should be in the ballpark. Yours would definitely need custom tuning. The good thing is a lot of people do it now. The blow-tru carb on my supercharged Camaro is only a 750, and I could've gone 650.

      Custom tune planned

I'm definitely planning on a custom tune for this build.

Any recommendations on a good custom tuner for a turbo / efi SBC build in the Seattle area ?

I'm about 3 months from getting the car to that point.
