Has anyone tried to do ther own interior work. Maybe used a how to DVD. I saw a used sewing machine that I may be able to get cheap. Just a thought. How difficult is upholstery work.

From working at a car shop and watching my boss do interiors heres a couple things i have picked up. When doing a custom interior you must take your time. When you are taking off the stock seat covers be easy on them and get them off in one piece. From there turn them inside out and pattern them. By which i mean take a sharpie and mark where all the Hash type marks are you'll know what i mean as soon as you see a seat cover inside out. This will more or less give you a template for your seats. this is if you are going to somewhat do the same type of stitch work like your stock seat.

If you are going to go for a full out custom job still take the covers off in one piece and use those as a template for how big you are going to make your new covers. However note how tight your stock seats were usually what my shop did at least is take like a 1/4 inch off so the seats were real nice and tight with no wrinkles. This depends but use it to your digression depending on your application.

You are always going to sew everything inside out. TAKE YOUR TIME i can't stress this enough cause your stitch work could suffer from it. Sewing machines are not hard to use but it does take practice so that you know how fast you need to move the fabric.

Wow sir you are brave! I was thinking of having my mom sew for me... Never considered doing it myself haha. I am just doing the back seat to match my buckets shouldn't be bad. I am ordering a plastic headliner smoothing it out and painting it body color doing fiberglass dash and center console probably door panels too, all painted eliminate the need for all that fabric work and increase the durability of my interior

Ya a lot of work but it'll be worth it in the end. I just hope my boss will be able to do my seats cause i want them to come out perfect the rest is just sewing and wrapping no problem there. But alas he has the IRS pounding at his door so i had to get all my stuff outta his shop and in my garage where needless to say there is no room at all.

If you can try and get a hand powered sewing machine then you will not have to worry about it running away if you hit the pedal to fast.

Sewing is difficult if you have never done it before,Just practice on scrap materials at first.Only take one seat apart at first so you can look at it and measure your seams.I've been doing it for 20 years,It is second nature to me.Don't get in a hurry if you don't have to.Check my website out for examples www.recoveryroominteriors.com
