Now I'm on to brakes. I didn't like the idea of using the original Locheed masters. I called the very helpful tech rep at Wilwood in Cali, told him what I had and what I was doing he reccomended these in a 1" bore for the front and a 7/8 for the back. Had to make up a bracket to hold the remote resoviors, other than it went pretty smooth.

The piece of brake duct is connected to the original Chevelle fresh air damper, I want to run the duct up to the front of the car to get some interior fresh air going but that little sub project gets DTBSL (Details to be sorted later) status.

On to the brake rebuilds they're Wilwood GT6000 fronts and Superlites out back. They were all in good shape, just had been sitting around for awhile. I disassembled them, popped out the pistons with air and had a look. The pistons and the bores were all in perfect shape. According to my Nascar buddy in Virginia the brakes are constructed with such high quality stainless steel that you can let them sit around for years and you can clean them up and be fine. I then blasted them all out with brake clean and air including removing and cleaning the transfer tubes.

Called Wilwood in Cali again, gave the tech rep the serial numbers off the brakes, he gave me the O ring kit part numbers and ordered up the kits from my local Wilwood dealer. About 20 bucks each.

Got the kits, the O rings I took out were in the same shape as the new ones, put the new ones in anyway. Ran into a bit of a setback here. Lubed up the new O rings with brake fluid and slipped the pistons in no problem on the fronts. On the rear, one went in no problem the other the O rings seemed to fit quite loose in the relief and would bunch up and not allow the piston to slip in, weird. Thought maybe the kit got packaged wrong so ordered up another set, same result. Called Willwood again gave him the serials off both the calipers this time he said the one has 1.10" pistons the other caliper has 1.25" pistons, they are different calipers wtf!

Called down to David in Virginia he said this is not uncommon for a Nascar with an oval track set up. They put a caliper with slightly larger pistons on the LS (left side) to drag a little more and help the car rotate. He said I have to make them the same or I'll keep locking the left rear and no amount of brake bias change will help it.

Been scouring ebay looking for a replacement rear caliper. The combination of age (1999 vintage according to the Wilwood rep, makes sense, the car is a 1999) the many different piston sizes available and right or left specific is making it tough. According to the catalog these current Forged Superlites offer the same 3.5" spaced mounting lugs are available for my 1.25" thick rotors and offer up to 1.75" pistons (much larger than what I have). Sounds like they'll bolt right up. I'll run them past the Wilwood rep and my Nascar guy, see what they think. After our exorbitant taxes $500 out the door for a pair including a set of pads. I'm ok with that. Anyone with experience with these calipers?

After a couple of mos of head scratching and direction seeking I skipped the original mild "starter" engine plan and went right to the big gun. 700 hp 434 Dart Iron Eagle block, Callies crank, Crower shaft rockers, solid roller, Jesel belt drive .736 lift. 15 deg Nascar "Pontiac" heads. These were from back when Pontiacs and Buicks ran in Cup. Ive you had a chevy the heads say nothing, if you ran a Buick they would say Buick, ran Pontiac said Pontiac but were all the same chevy head. The SB2 replaced this engine. The clincher was 11.3:1 pump gas. Thing dynoed at 700 even with a 1050 Dominator ran a 3300 Iroc 9.40s last Sept shifting at 6800 off a brake. Estimate 680hp with a good 750dp. I'll change the pan to the Canton shown in the pic but will piece together a dry sump eventually. Bills show complete refresh last June , guy said 15 to 20 passes since. Should haul like a mofo I had to have it.

I've been following this thread for a few months. Thought I'd chime in and tell you this is one of my favorite projects on the boards. You nailed the stance. Can't wait to see it done.

      my 69 chevelle 'Cup' project

Just found this thread, it's awesome. I'm building something similar except its a 89 Chevy truck on a hooters pro cup chassis. I will also be running it at mosport hopefully we can get these weapons together and have some fun. I need to start a thread so I can get some input from everyone. Good luck on the rest of the build I'm looking forward to updates

This build is killer! I'm starting a build where I'm doing exactly what you have done. I'll be dropping a Dodge Aspen body over a Lt will help a Laughlin 105" chassis. Your work has given me a lot of inspiration and instruction that will help a ton.

SP -you'll have to drop in to the shop sometime

ID -You know Ive really just winged it on this build. Theres no place to go to find out how to do this. If I had more time Id start a website devoted to Street and Roadrace Stock cars. Im sincerely happy the car has at least helped you decide to build the car. Thats the biggest reason for detail Ive put in this thread. If I had more time Id start a website devoted to Street and Roadrace Stock cars. If either of you have questions feel free to PM me. D

Just read through your entire thread! Cool stuff! If your ever around Barrie Speedway some Saturday night head over! I work there as a tech inspector.(22 years now) I agree lots of great parts from Nascar cast offs around. Cheap too. I was eyeballing a few Dodge cup engines, they are cheap enough! Got a few contacts around Moorsville myself. Lots of Chevelles got used up on short tracks over the years. Chevelle chassis still live and race on the track even today. If your looking for a home for the stock Chevelle chassis I can set you up with someomne who will buy/use it? I have an extra Cup rear end housing here if you need one.
