      G-Body Front Setup Solutions - Arms/Coilovers?

Do coilovers offer any advantages other than a little weight savings and ride height adjustability?

I'm looking for a front control arm solution instead of refurbishing the stockers so any more options there are welcome. I'm already familiar with:

      Hotchkis
      BMR
      Global West
      SC&C

Just seeing if there are any other viable options and whether or not to go with coilovers.

Look at the Speed Tech ones. They are very nice. I have both the upper and lowers. They come with stainless steel cross shafts and billet ball joint caps. I also have QA1 coil overs. Haven't actually seen the road yet, but they look nice. I think the biggest benifit to the coil overs is the ride height adjustability.

      http://www.globalwest.net/1973-87%20...components.htm
upper tubulars with B-body spindels, negative roll system
the spohn lower arms for coil over set up are ok, but buy the arms with adjustable rod ends

      not the simply one
      greets

Tony, coil overs offer a wider range of adjustability and tunability that`s their chief advantage. That said, expect that if you get them you will need to adjust and tune them to get them the way you want them. It`s the nature of the beast and can be both a blessing and a curse. Given identical spring and dampening rates and assuming no change in motion ratio (which most conversions leave alone) a coilover and coil spring/shock will perform exactly the same. Be honest with yourself. If you really are going to tweak the ride height, change spring rates etc. on a regular basis the coil overs are for you. If you`re going to set the car up once and leave it there then you`ll probably be better off with a conventional spring and good adj. shock which will give you the same performance and a lot of the same tunability for less time and money.

Aftermarket front arms should be seen as a compliment to other upgrades and geometry changes you may have made or are making. Choose them on that basis and you won`t be disapointed. Arms alone make very little difference in the performance of a car because they just connect the dots. They have virtually no effect on the geometry, you have to move pickup (pivot) points (the dots) to do that. Most of the cars we deal with need to have them moved vertically, and quite a bit to get the package up to modern standards. You won`t get that with any arms. But...once you make the necessary changes you will need the arms to compliment them because the stock arms (especially the uppers) will no longer be the right length, offset of angle to fit the car properly anymore.
