      time for roll bar?

For those of you who work in shops, what would you charge time wise for a nicely TIG welded SCCA legal roll bar? its a main hoop with door bars, a diagonal between the down bars and another diagonal in the main hoop, It has 6 atatchment points. its factory style for a Porsche RSR

That depends on material... 4130 takes much more prep and attention during the weld itself.

And you cant really put a price on how many hours... as that depends on the complexity of what you need done and then what want done.

Time and materials usually comes out to material cost and anywhere between $50 to $300 an hour.

Oh yeah... and then you said Porsche....

What year RSR?? They might have a Factory kit for it still.

But yes, you have strip down prep, fitting, bending, fitting, tacking, measuring, then finish work and then reassembly.

I'd venture to guesstimate 75-85 hours. Not a lot of room to work in too. Wait, I think it be less if we could cut the car in half.

ok i built the bar already and yes it took some time because it was a side job, but i need to come up with a realistic price for this thing. its mild steel, DOM, tig welded.

not a real RSR but its along those lines

911's arnt too bad... you can tack every thing up and pull out the whole roll bar for finish welding.... then you install the door bars with every thing in the car. If your doing a complex cage on the other hand yes it get pretty tricky

it looks kind of like this...http://quiethorsepower.com/images/911Rollbar.jpg

but i put another diagonal in the main hoop criss crossing the harness bar. Also it was welded in not bolted

Oh ok, my bad. I thought you were comparing estimates. If its all stripped out already then yeah it would run less...stuff like that i'd go flat rate.

Rob, before I had my cage built by a small local 2 guy shop for a lot less, I talked with 2 other area shops that do mainly SCCA cars and a lot of Porches. Both quoted a mig welded DOM cage for $2000 in my Firebird which has more tubing. Tig weld isn't nesseary.
They had several Porches sitting around so I looked them over, I didn't see anything that made them any harder than mine, one guy did say the metal is thinner so welding floor plates was a little trickier. He said about 80 ft did a Porche, mine took about 100 ft.
Extra $ if you wanted them to do a fuel cell mount or different seat mounts, that was a cage only price.

I'll give you my formula, it works pretty well

$45 per pad, $25 per bend and $10.50 per foot + actual material costs for the tubing. For 4130, I tack on between 5 & 10 per foot depending on how tight they want the cage to the chassis which requires WAY more pre planning on assembly and welding.

That's just for the cage work. Interior prep and everything else is at an hourly shop rate and always varies on each car that rolls in
