      Paypal sucks!

I'm not a big time ebayer by any means but I do use it from time to time. I recently sold a gold coin.

      Ebay fees = $6.50
      Paypal fees = $27

      Total = $33.50

Now I'm not to worked up over the ebay fees. I could have saved a few bucks on certain options, but 27 bucks just to recieve money are you kidding me. Now I understand why so many ebayers say "Absolutly no PAYPAL".

What do you guys do in lieu of paypal? What is the safest and most convienent way to recieve payment for somthing if I don't have a way to accept credit cards?

Just looking for advice down the road. Thanks

You think that's bad.. you're luck the buyer didn't claint your gold coin was fake. In that case Paypal would have taken the money back from your account and refunded the buyer. Then the buyer could send you back a fake coin and keep the real one you sent.

And there's not one thing you could do about it. Paypal most always sides with the buyer. I hate Paypal

$27 dollars? That means you sold the coin for about $950.

$27 is not a horrible cut to receive $950. In that case I would have requested a Postal Money order

Steve you do have a point.. ... but would you as a buyer feel safe sending a $950 money order to seller who could send out a fake gold coin?

My problem is that Paypal will almost always take the word of the buyer.

Would you feel safe sending out a $950 coin knowing the buyer could claim it was a fake, keep the coin AND get a forced refund?

Now, only a tiny percent of people are crooked but it only takes one to ruin your day. lol

The chances of the guy being a crook is slim, I wouldn't worry too much.

Paypal does almost always side with the buyer.. which I don't think is fair either but that's who they are catering to, especially lately with their new policies.

I do think the buyer should be liable for at least 1/2 the Paypal fee's though for their protection and conveince in the whole transaction.

Funny I've never had a problem with Paypal and think their fee is not excessive at all - this is a profit company. I've used them over 20 times w/o issues and recently I sold a center console for $315 and it cost me just under $9 to do so. I received the money immediately and then moved it to my personal account. As always, it was a simple transaction that took no time and effort to complete.

If you are upset with their costs - add 5% to the total price to get your net price. Simple really.....

When using Paypal to buy something I always charge it to my Mastercard. Don't believe the hype that you waive your credit card rights when you use one with Paypal. That agreement is between you and the credit card company and Paypal has no say in that.

On the other hand I have been screwed with money orders. With today's printers and PCs you can make a real good fake money order.

Well in for a penny in for a pound.

I sent the coin off Priority Mail with $900 of insurance and Delivery Confirmation.
      Ebay fees = $6.50
      Paypal fees = $27.53
Shipping through the postal service $14.11
New grand total = $48.14 off the original $939 winning bid. I had Free shipping listed. It didn't really help drive the bid any higher from what I could see.

I could have bought a new fuel pump and pre-bent line with that $48.

OK but you can now buy 40+ fuel pumps and pre-bent lines with the almost $900 you just got.... The same $900 you would not have if you hadn't sold the coin in the first place.

Half empty or half full - all depends on your view....

Just an FYI. If you decided to ask for the extra that paypal charges, Your ad could get cancelled. It's in the contract with ebay that you sign up for when you started your account. I didn't know this and placed and ad stating just that.: " If you pay with paypal, you will be responsible for the 3 percent that paypal charges me. "" I found out from a buyer letting me know the rules. I checked it, and sure enough, it is in there. you cant ask for paypal charges.

Oh, and for unreal charges. Look at a vehicle charge. I sold a motorcycle on there about a year ago. 40 dollar insertion fee, 10 dollars for listing fees, then another 40 dollars for a final value fee once the bike sold. 90 bucks regardless of how much the bike sold for. Actually, I think it was over 100 total after everything was said and done. And, I think the charges are now 50 instead of 40.

anyway, it is expensive. But I guess you can't get that kind of exposure for your products anywhere else. But somebody sure is getting rich aweful fast.

I look at it like this, could you have sold the locally for the same $?
      If not you did good.......
If so you should have and made the extra $......
I sell stuff on Ebay I would have to throw away locally so the fees are ok. Also I have a seperate (always empty) account for PayPal, I transfer to my bank I then transfer it to my regular account.
