      Transmisson Type

When you guys do the LS engine install, do you guys swap transmissions too or do you keep the original 4spd? I know the modular bellhousings are $500 + to keep the older trans.

Most guys keep the trans that came with the LSx motor (out of a wrecked car) if they bought their motor that way. I'll take a T56 over a 4 speed any day. Why run a modern motor with an ancient transmission?

i sold my autogear m22, lakewood bell, centerforce clutch, flywheel, hurst shifter, and linkage for $2100.

picked up a t56 with shifter for $1000
scored a new ls7 clutch and flywheel $400
      ATS t56 swap $745

almost broke even. one of my reasons for swaping my ls1 was due to a trans upgrade. my 4 speed and 4.11 rear just wanst workin for me. i looked into buying a tko600 but wanted the 6 speed. and with it came the ls1

You don't need a new bell housing to run an old trans with an LSx, you just need a 168 tooth bell housing. I've got an old school 168 tooth bell housing that was cracked sitting behind a 5.3 with a TKO 600 mated to it. Had the crack welded up and had to heli coil one trans hole. No issues. This car required the use of a hydraulic throw out bearing so I have a McLeod unit. I designed a Zbar plate to mount off my motor swap plates so a manual clutch can even be retained. This is all for C3 corvettes but the fact remains, it can be done.

I'd switch to at least a 5 Speed. You can pick on up used too or go T56 .

Now a days on ls1tech t56's go for pretty cheap. Just make sure you get an ls and not a lt unit
