need your experience: putting 4th gen disc brakes on my 87 monte

i have the 7 5/8 rear axles with the stupid spring clipped brake cylinders. has any one done something similar? i know the rear is a little different from other gm rears. i have the mounting brackets and all other parts from a 93-97 camaro but will they need modifications to work? are there even bolts ont the axle housing for the brackets?

anyone think this is unsafe or otherwise unwise to do? i figure that since it's the rear brakes i can get away with it, but...
the only difference to my parts is that i have the p-brake integrated with the caliper, not the in-hat style.

you can modify your housing to work

I saw that thread on thirdgen.org about that - seems simple enough -
I'd do it and not look back you'd never have to F%&# with trying to mount wheel cylinders on that again!

You can modify your axle housing bolt pattern or call Baer Racing & get just the caliper mounting brackets to mount to the factory bolt pattern. That is what I did.

exactly!!! i had an old malibu with this axle and the spring clip would pop out once a week 'cause the backing plate was rusted.

samckitt: i've looked at baer's website and can't find crap for my car. unfortunately (well, not for you) you have the 8.5 rear which is a normal 4-bolt flange and my 7.625 has the stupid 2 small bolt, 1 large bolt set up.
i can find brackets but they're all for the eldorado calipers and i already have my parts.
as long as it won't be a safety issue i probably will just cut and drill the flange and be done with it.

The 8.5 GN rear has the same bolt flange as the stock Monte does. A friend of mine called Baer to get the brackets. I have had them for a few years. I also had to get shock relocation brackets so the shocks would clear the calipers. Also I had to remove the weight from the caliper. And with the Baer brackets I have to use '94 Vette rear rotors. So like you said, just modify the flange to work with what you have.

ok, guess i was wrong. i thought it was only the 7.625, i guess they screwed all the g-bodies.

i guess i'll be puling out the drill.

I did the LS1 rears on my El Camino. Not real hard but I did have to make the shock relocation brackets. Here are some pics of my setup http://www.poltergeist.us/page/Elky/...es_rearend.htm

If you wanted to sell the brakes you have now and get C5 or C6 rears you can do them without having to cut up the rear. http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/br...ear-c5-c6.html Another option.

Eventually I will probably do the same as you Poltergeist. I would prefer to have the E brake since I have a manual tranny.
