OK we just helped a friendf replace a shop that got damaged by small tornado.
If your going to spend the cash figure on a in floor heating system and it will so cut down on upper living areas heat requirements.
We found one company(ill do a search and see if I can find name) that uses the inf lor system to heat and cool. The big slab of concrete can be "chilled " to around 50-55 degrees and it does work and small floor fans help to blow cool air over you as you work and if you want regular AC just works so much more efficient.
He also added lots of outlets, piped air, hot and cold water and a super duty remote sweeper system.
The one thing we did in our plans was figured in the cost of getting the absolute highest poundage spray foam insulation.
He has 2 window AC units and the floor heat/AC and the window units are simple 10,000btu units. He rare ly runs them because withthe spray foam you can heat and cool it with a couple of bic lighters and a block of ice ,,seriously.
His pad has 6 foot pillars in the ground, it sits on 3 layers underneath. Heavy rubble from local limestone quarries (road work, concrete rubble also work) then #rock and then all drains are supported by rock and side supported with sand.
Then he had the insulation(think very large piece of syrofoam) and the heating grid laid out then concrete.
He put 4 ,of the smallest Modine Bull dog heaters in for extra ummmph but has yet to do more than test them and is thinking if/when I get me a small shop built giving me one or more of them.
Alos use as heavy a wire as if your going to have some serious power going places (like 440 3 phase). I am serious my budy bought a rather large industrial plasma CNC and it cost out the A$$ to rerun wiring.
But the unit made hime nearly $80 in first year for fun(he had regualr job and would fll the bed with stock and let it cut while at work, machine wasnt hurt in storm sooooo.
But we made some serious up grades.
The infloor heating system can also be installed in living area too. Very cool when its super cold out and you pick up tools that are WARM!
He's heating a 60x80 building and has spent less than heating his rather large home(wife, 4 kids,2 dogs 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths and it has similar insulation , got 4 1/2 stars for energy conservation as the hot tub wasnt in enclosed building just had open walls around it).
