Pulley issue need help please

Hey all,

Dang belt (serpentine) keeps rolling off the back of the back of the power steering pulley at high rpm. Not all the way off, but about 1/8" and just rides there chewing up my new belt.



All accessory pulleys are from S&P (a/c, idlers, and p/steering)
I have issues with several S&P products I have puchased, but that's another story.

I had the old p/st pulley removed from pump and the S&P one pressed on at local Napa, and when I picked it up, I could see right away that it was not pressed far enough on. Mach. shop guy said that was as far as it would go on, and he scratched it up a bit in the process. Paid him his fifteen bucks to get my pump out of jail and took it home to try it. No dice, it was way off. Took it back and guy said nothing he could/would do for me and no refund, wouldn't even pull it back off for me! Have not been there since! Bad man! Grrrrrrrr

Took it to another shop. (Carquest) Guy said he would try, and was able to get it pressed on quite a bit farther, didn't even charge me for the work. Good guy! Took it home to try and.................

That's where I am now, all the other pulleys seem to be ok, so I'm sure this p/st pulley is still not pressed on far enough.



Bad pic, but back of pulley is aprox. 1/4" from res. tank.
does this look right? If so, my prob is elsewhere.

Any LSX guys or gals out there with F-car accessories that would be willing to take a measurement of pulley to tank clearance and post what yours is?

Mine is 1999 LS1 f-car if that makes a diff.

could the pulley be backwards?are there any spacers behind it? are all the other pulleys aligned?

I've got an 02 SS in the shop. I'll take a look tomorrow and let you know some measurements. Typically you press the pulley on until it stops. There is a stop for it to go up against. You know, a PS pulley installed/remover is not expensive and can be bought in just about any parts store. This will keep you from having to depend on others.

the pulley should be just under 3/16" away from the resevoir.

Can you run a straightedge against the pulley and see how it aligns to the crank?

WS6, Thank you for taking the time to measure for me. I just made a more accurate measurement on mine, and found it is actualy closer to 5/16" from the tank, so it needs to go on further. Problem is it won't budge at all (bought the tool) won't even come off now, and I'm gonna just hash this thing by the time I get it off. I think that it either has a burr holding it back, or was just machined wrong to begin with. I guess I'll find out when I see it. No way in hell S&P will take this thing back now unless I can prove it was defective. I ordered all this stuff about 2 1/2 years ago, one of the problems with buying parts long before you actualy use them. What the heck, It's only money right? thanks again.

Carl, these pulley from S&P are not flat on the "face", but are dome shaped. Pretty tough to use the old straight edge trick. Thanks, Mark

I had that problem on my LS6. When the tranny would kick-down and the revs jump up the belt will slacken ever so slightly ,like cracking a whip and it would walk and end up half on ad half off the pwr steering pully. Checked and re-checked all OK. Ended up going to a 5mm or 7mm shorter belt......20,000 miles later still OK.....
