      Another welding question

I would like to weld a 1/4" piece of steel to a 1/8" piece of steel in a T fashion. Now if I was just going to weld the 1/4" to the 1/8" without beveling the 1/4" first I know I would use the settings on the welder for 1/4". BUT IF I do bevel the edges of the 1/4" plate to roughly 1/8" would I then use the 1/8" settings on the welder????? BTW mig welding. Thanks Chris

Either way you'd set it for the thicker peice, then try to keep the weld and heat more towards the thicker piece. You can either weave a little while welding or practice first to get your ratio (80-20 or 60-40 for example) down pat. The weld will be hot enough to burn through the thinner peice if you keep it on there for too long.
